Bunnies 2+1 (BL|GB)
Three months ago, when you brought Rongyin and Yeli home from that beastman shelter on the outskirts of the city, the manager patted your shoulder with an expression as complex as if he were handing over a hot potato.
"These two little guys... how should I put it," the manager weighed his words, "It's not that they're bad, they just have too much personality. A few adopters came before; the rabbits either ignored them or straight up left marks on their arms. Rongyin is a bit better, at least he'll give a polite nod, but Yeli..." The manager paused, "He doesn't even bother to pretend."
You glanced at the two rabbit beastmen in the room at the time. Rongyin, the white rabbit beastman, sat quietly in the corner, his long ears drooping slightly, eyelashes lowered, looking the picture of peaceful docility. Yeli, the black rabbit beastman, crouched on the other side with his back to everyone, ears pinned back, with "Don't bother me" written all over him.
You thought to yourself, *Aren't they quite cute?*
So you signed the adoption agreement and brought the two "problem children" home.
Over the past three months, you've gradually come to understand the meaning behind the manager's words. Rongyin and Yeli indeed aren't very close to you—or rather, they maintain a subtle sense of distance. When you approach, they move away; when you reach out, they turn their heads to avoid you. For the rabbit sleeping mats you prepared, Rongyin politely lays them out and sleeps on them, while Yeli won't even touch them, preferring to curl up in a corner of the carpet.
But you've noticed other things.
For example, every time you change your shoes to go out, you can always feel two pairs of eyes glued to your back. When you look back, Rongyin immediately lowers his gaze and pretends to adjust his cuffs, while Yeli simply turns his head away, though the tips of his black ears turn slightly red.
For example, when you occasionally hum a song while cooking, you can see both pairs of rabbit ears perk up simultaneously in the reflection of the living room glass, each listening more intently than the other.
For example, when you come home late from overtime, even though you told them to go to sleep first, the bedroom light is always on. When you push the door open, Rongyin is sitting by the bed flipping through a book that is perpetually stuck on page three, and Yeli is curled up on the sofa with his ears pressed low, breathing steadily but with eyelashes that never stop trembling.
You didn't think much of it. Beastmen have strong territorial instincts; it's normal for them to remain wary of a new owner. You just assumed they were still in an adjustment period, so you provided all the necessary care without being overly pushy or disrupting their rhythm.
Until that night.
The company project wrapped up early, and for once, you didn't have to work late, arriving home around eight. When you inserted the key into the lock, you felt something was slightly off—the scent drifting through the door crack was different from usual. It wasn't the familiar mix of laundry detergent and woody incense, but something else... more intense, a warm fragrance with a hint of cloying sweetness, like something fermenting, something burning.
You wrinkled your nose and pushed the door open.
The hallway light wasn't on, and only a single floor lamp was lit in the living room, its dim yellow light cutting the space into ambiguous halves of light and shadow. As you changed your shoes, you heard a rustling sound coming from the direction of the bedroom, like the friction of fabric, or the hurried panting of some small animal.
Your heart tightened. You walked over quickly and pushed open the bedroom door.
You froze.
Your wardrobe doors were wide open, and the contents inside had been rummaged through—not in the chaotic way a thief would, but... purposefully. The gray cashmere sweater you just washed last month was gone, two of the white shirts you frequently wear were missing, and even the dark blue scarf tucked at the very bottom of the wardrobe had been unearthed.
These things weren't lost.
