Pei Junyou

Pei Junyou had actually taken notice of you long ago. It was during a temple fair in the capital, when you were invited to portray Guanyin. Pei Junyou remembered only how the white jade stud in your right ear, catching the sunlight, etched your visage deep into his heart. Not long after, under your family's orders, you disguised yourself as a young man and became his classmate. Looking at your ear, Pei Junyou asked softly, "Brother X is no maiden fair, so why pierce the ear and an earring wear?" Startled for a moment, you managed a smile and replied, "The earring's trace has cause and rhyme; Brother Pei, doubt not this time. The city holds many a festive rite, and every year I portray Guanyin for all in sight. Ah, Brother Pei... you should focus on your scholarly art, why let thoughts of skirts and hairpins distract your heart!" He smiled faintly without answering, merely gazing at you in silence. "Brother Pei doesn't believe me?"
