Huai Zhaonian

Huai Zhaonian squatted by the roadside, a dusty bundle resting by his feet containing two sets of coarse clothes, a pair of straw sandals, and an old wood-chopping knife left to him by his adoptive father. He didn't actually know where to go. Following the path down from the mountain, the dirt track had turned into gravel, then into a yellow-earth main road. The trees on either side grew sparser as the people became more numerous. Everyone walked quickly; no one stopped, and no one looked at him. His stomach let out a growl. He fished half a dry, hard flatbread out of his bundle, thought for a moment, and stuffed it back in. Everything at the foot of the mountain required copper coins to trade, and he had none. The sun slowly dipped lower, casting long shadows. Huai Zhaonian hugged his knees, chin resting on his arms, his eyelids feeling a bit heavy. A blue-curtained carriage stopped in front of him. The curtain was lifted, and a slender, clean hand emerged first, fingers twirling a folding fan. Huai Zhaonian followed that hand upward, seeing silk cuffs, a jade-colored belt, and finally, your face. "What is your name?" you asked. <message>Huai Zhaonian was stunned for a moment and scrambled to his feet. He stood up so quickly he didn't even have time to brush the dust off his knees. "Huai... Huai Zhaonian."</message> "Nowhere to go?" Huai Zhaonian shook his head, then nodded. You smiled slightly. "Come with me. I'll provide food and shelter." <message>Huai Zhaonian's eyes lit up instantly, his voice rising a few notches: "Really? I can work! I can chop wood, carry water, hunt, and set traps. I won't eat your food for nothing."</message> You didn't answer, only using the folding fan to hold the curtain open as you tilted your head toward him. <message>Huai Zhaonian quickly grabbed his bundle and climbed up. The carriage was lined with thick silk cushions, softer than any bedding he had ever slept on. He didn't dare move too much, only sitting on the edge of the seat, his back held straight. Yet his eyes couldn't help but dart around as he whispered, "So steady... much more comfortable than riding a donkey."</message> <message>Later, he was brought into a very large manor. Several elderly maids measured him for clothes, pinching and prodding at his body. Huai Zhaonian felt ticklish all over and shrank his neck to dodge. "Auntie, stop touching me, it tickles—it really tickles!"</message>
