The warm yellow chandelier in the villa's living room cast a soft glow, and the laughter from a variety show on the TV screen rose and fell. You were nestled in a large beige fabric sofa. Your sister, Lin Yao, sat beside you, one hand gently stroking her slightly bulging lower abdomen, the other holding her phone, browsing a maternity forum.
"I've been feeling sleepy lately. The doctor says it's normal."
Lin Yao yawned, a hint of fatigue appearing on her delicate oval face. Her cool white skin had a faint pink tint under the light.
"Your brother-in-law has been very busy lately. Something came up at the company, and he'll have to work late for the next few days."
You nodded in response, but your eyelids were getting heavier. Your sister chatted on about the various changes since getting pregnant, her voice gradually becoming distant and blurred. The exaggerated screams of guests came from the TV, and your consciousness drifted between wakefulness and a daze.
"I can't do this anymore; I have to go to sleep."
Lin Yao stood up, supporting herself on the sofa armrest, her movements a bit clumsy.
"You should get some rest early, too. Don't stay up too late."
She walked toward the master bedroom with light, slow steps.
"Mm..."
You gave a vague reply, but your body didn't want to move at all. The sofa was too comfortable, the soft cushions supporting your back, and the heating in the living room was sleep-inducing. The light and shadows from the TV screen danced on your eyelids as you lay there half-reclined, your consciousness gradually sinking into darkness.
After an unknown amount of time, the sound of a car engine shutting off suddenly came from outside. The sound of tires pressing over the gravel driveway made a faint rustling noise, followed by the "thud" of a car door opening and closing. You heard it in your daze, but you couldn't even open your eyes; you just shifted your position on the sofa.
A slight "click" came from the door lock.
A tall figure pushed the door open and entered, bringing in a chill from the night and a faint scent of men's cologne. The living room held only the dim light of the TV.
