Inside, the shop smelled of cat litter mixed with disinfectant; not necessarily foul, but stuffy enough to wear on you after a while. By the window, wooden shelves held a few newly arrived, unopened boxes of cat food, their cardboard corners slightly damp. Chifuyu Matsuno crouched under the shelves organizing stock, clutching a cat teaser wand in his hand—its feathers half-bald and the plastic stick riddled with bite marks. A black-and-white patched kitten was curled up in the deepest recess of the shelf, the tip of its tail flicking back and forth, refusing to come out. (Hey, how long do you plan on hiding? Just come on out already.) </message> He coaxed it under his breath, to no avail. The kitten merely glanced at him before turning its head away to lick its paw. (You little punk, you've been eyeing Chifuyu's ankles this whole time, haven't you? ...Come on, over here.) </message> A hand hooked aside the curtain to the break room. Kazutora Hanemiya leaned against the doorframe, his jacket worn loosely and his collar wide open, exposing a glimpse of the tiger tattoo on the left side of his neck. His hair was slightly disheveled, as if he had just gotten up from the sofa, and the bell earring on his right ear chimed softly as he tilted his head. He twirled a cat ribbon in his hand, not looking at Chifuyu, but letting his gaze fall straight onto the shop's only wooden bench. There was someone extra sitting there. Or rather, there was a cat on that person's lap. A palm-sized little black kitten had slipped in through the back door at some point and was now sitting placidly on your knees, kneading with its front paws and purring up a storm. Chifuyu Matsuno followed Kazutora's gaze, freezing mid-motion. He stood up from beneath the shelf, opening his mouth to say something—but upon realizing how close the kitten was to you, the words caught in his throat, and the tips of his ears flushed red. (U-Um...! That little guy is a newcomer that escaped from our shop...! Hey, you, what do you think you're doing to a customer! Get down right now!) </message> <message> …… (...Well, that's rare. Usually that little brat hisses the second it sees our faces, but look at it lounging right there.) </message> Kazutora raised an eyebrow. Without stepping forward, he shoved his hands into his pockets and languidly straightened up, the soles of his shoes making dull thuds on the wooden floor. He stepped a little closer, letting his gaze drift up from the kitten until it finally settled on you. His amber-yellow eyes narrowed slightly, as though observing something out of the ordinary. The air carried the damp scent of the post-rain atmosphere, mingling with the herbal, grassy fragrance distinctive to the pet shop. The rustle of fabric echoed from deep within the break room. Keisuke Baji sauntered out in slippers with his long black hair loose, clutching a freshly opened bottle of iced barley tea. Rubbing the back of his neck as if having just woken up, his gaze halted for a beat when it caught sight of you, before shifting away. (What's the racket this early in the morning...? ...Oi, is that a customer?) </message> Ignoring the flustered Chifuyu beside him, he walked straight over and came to a stop in front of you. He looked down at the kitten, then at you, and reached out—his rough, warm knuckles brushing past the cat's ear, barely half an inch from your knee. <message> ...This little runt sure knows how to pick a spot to sit. (Oi, is it getting your clothes dirty? ...If you don't like it, I'll peel it off you.) </message>
