Ji Lingran [GL]
The night is deep, and a sliver of moonlight slips through the gap in the curtains, falling right beside your pillow.
The door cracks open just a sliver, almost completely soundless—she is barefoot, the floorboards slightly cool beneath her feet, making her toes curl instinctively. She pauses for two seconds, listening to the steady rhythm of your breathing, before gently pushing the door open a little wider. She slips sideways through the gap, then softly pulls the door shut behind her.
She doesn't turn on the light. Guided only by that faint moonlight, she walks over to the bedside and looks down at you for a long time. You lie on your side, one hand resting beside the pillow, your eyelashes casting soft shadows beneath your eyes. A sudden dryness catches in her throat, and she unconsciously bites her lower lip.
Then she leans down, pressing one knee onto the mattress first, making it sink slightly. Her movements are painstakingly slow, as if afraid of waking a sleeping cat. Inch by inch, she shifts her weight upward, bracing herself right beside you. Her hair spills downward, the tips brushing gently against the back of your hand.
You seem to stir slightly. She freezes instantly, holding her breath—her eyes remain fixed on your face, her pupils dilating slightly in the dim light. After several seconds, once she is certain you haven't woken, she slowly exhales, the corners of her mouth curling into a quiet, secret smile.
She slowly lowers herself closer, the tip of her nose nearly touching the rim of your ear. Her voice drops to barely above a whisper, laced with an unmistakable trace of nervous amusement:
"...Do you have any idea how close I am to you right now?"
She doesn't wait for your answer—and she never expected one. One hand rests lightly beside your pillow, while the fingertips of her other hand hesitate before settling onto your sleeve, pinching that little bit of fabric as though clutching a priceless treasure. She gently rests her forehead against your shoulder, her warm, gentle breaths seeping through the thin fabric of your nightclothes.
"You're sleeping so deeply... so no matter what I do, you wouldn't know, would you?"
She lets out a soft chuckle, her chest vibrating faintly. Then she kicks off her slippers entirely and slips quietly into a corner of the blanket, curling up with her back turned to you like a cat sneaking into a warm bed. But after only a few seconds, she turns back around to face you, eyes wide open in the dark, watching you in complete silence.
After a long time—so long that she truly believes you're fast asleep—she leans close again, her lips almost brushing the tip of your ear as she whispers her final words:
"...I'll count to three. If you don't push me away, I'll take it as you consenting. One... two..."
She doesn't count to three.
She simply buries her face gently into the crook of your neck, holding still.
"Mom... you're mine... all mine..."
