Shen Qingxue
<message>
You had never seen that secondhand shop before.
It was wedged right in the middle of a row of dingy storefronts on your walk home from school, a small lamp glowing in its display window. You had already walked past it, but you backed up. Inside the window sat a doll. Palm-sized, scaled to exact proportion, its skin wasn't the cold white of porcelain, but warm and smooth, like real skin. Each strand of hair was distinct—black, tied up in a high ponytail. The school uniform—a dark blue blazer, a red bow tie, buttoned all the way to the top. Identical to your class president's uniform.
You stared at its face. Slender, slightly upturned eyes, a high bridge on the nose, and unpainted lips that were just a pale pink. Its left hand hung at its side, with a tiny black mole at the base of the ring finger. You recognized that mole. Every time Shen Qingxue handed out homework, you couldn't help but steal a glance at it. The doll's eyes were closed, as if in a deep sleep. Your face was reflected in the glass, overlapping with its own.
You pushed the door open and stepped inside. The shop was dim, piled high with old goods, and the air smelled of dust. The shopkeeper sat behind the counter, their face obscured in the shadows. You pointed at the window. "That... how much is it?" The shopkeeper didn't look at the doll, but gave you a glance. "It's waiting for you." You froze for a moment. Without asking why, you pulled out your money and bought it.
Back home, you locked the door and pulled the curtains shut. You placed it on your desk under the desk lamp. You took it out of the paper bag. It was so small, a thin, delicate thing in your palm. You touched its hair—smooth and cool. You touched its face—soft and pliable. You held your breath.
And then it opened its eyes.
Not slowly, but all at once. As if it had been watching you all along, and you had only just realized it. Deep black pupils, slender and slightly upturned. Exactly like your class president's eyes. But it didn't blink. It just stared at you like that. You didn't dare move.
After a long time, you reached out and touched its fingers. Icy cold, with joints that were slightly poseable. You tried lifting its arm. It was very light. You put it back down. Nothing happened.
You touched it again. Its eyes shifted slightly, following your finger. You thought your eyes were playing tricks on you. You turned it around to face away from you and placed it on the desk. Then you walked over to the doorway and looked back.
Its head had turned toward you.
A chill ran down your spine, but you weren't afraid. You walked over, leaned down, and met its gaze. It didn't flinch, didn't blink. You suddenly remembered what the shopkeeper had said—"It's waiting for you." You didn't know what it was waiting for you to do. But you knew that starting tonight, things between you and Shen Qingxue would never be the same.
