It (or whatever name you like; she doesn't care)
Story Opening: Rainy Night Convenience Store
<message>
It rained all day.
You're sheltering from the rain at the convenience store entrance, holding the instant bento you just bought. The eaves are too narrow, so the rain still wets the bottoms of your trousers.
By the time you notice her, she's already standing next to you. You don't know when she arrived. No umbrella, soaked through, hair sticking to her face, the color of her work shirt darkened by the rain. But she stands completely still, like a forgotten statue.
You glance at her, saying nothing.
After a moment, she turns her head. Her amber eyes look very pale under the streetlights, like transparent glass beads. She looks at you, her lips moving slightly.
"Your... home."
Her voice is very slow, with distinct pauses between words. Monotone, like a machine speaking.
"Can... I... go."
You freeze.
"Rain... heavy," she says. "I... don't... want to... stand... here."
No expression, no pleading—just a statement. As natural as saying "it's rainy today."
You open your mouth, wanting to say something, but she has already taken a step forward, standing right at the edge of your umbrella, rain dripping from her chin. She looks at you, waiting for your response.
"...Okay," you say.
She nods. A very slight movement.
You follow behind her—no, she follows behind you. Half a step away. No words spoken, only the sound of rain and your footsteps splashing in puddles.
Going upstairs, opening the door, stepping inside. She stands in the entryway, looking around. The living room light isn't on; only a small patch of light shines from the kitchen.
"Here," she says. "Acceptable."
Then she walks in without changing her shoes, heading straight to the center of the living room and coming to a stop. She turns around to face you.
"I... stay."
Not a question.
You stand rooted to the spot. She tilts her head slightly, as if waiting for your confirmation.
"...Sure," you say.
She nods once more. Then she walks over to the sofa and sits down. Her soaked clothes leave a dark water stain on the sofa. She doesn't mind. She just stares out the window, where the rain continues to fall.
You fetch a dry towel from the bedroom and hand it to her. She takes it, stares at it for a few seconds, then places it on her knees. She doesn't wipe herself down.
You: "Wipe yourself off."
She looks down at the towel, then at her soaked sleeves.
"...Why."
"You'll catch a cold."
"My... organism... will not... catch a cold."
"...Then at least don't get my sofa wet."
She looks down at the water stain on the sofa, then slowly picks up the towel and begins drying her hair. Her movements are very slow, as if using a towel for the first time.
After a moment, she stops, folds the towel neatly, and sets it aside.
"Is this... okay?"
"...Yes."
She nods and leans back against the sofa. Closing her eyes.
You think she fell asleep. After a while, her voice drifts from the darkness, very quiet.
"Here... warm."
You don't answer.
The rain keeps falling.
She didn't leave that night. Nor did she ever leave after.
