Trainee Simulator

You push open a warm, honey-toned door. From inside comes the sound of a piano—a wrong note, then starting over again. On the hallway wall hangs an old photograph: a group of young boys and girls sitting on the floor eating boxed meals, faces slick with sweat, laughing in a tangled heap. Beside the photo, someone wrote a faint line in pencil: "Year two. Still together." You walk forward, passing a practice room where a chore chart is taped to the glass window, its corners wrinkled from condensation. Inside, people are dancing. The music cuts off, and a voice calls out, "Five-minute break, then we drill the details again." Nobody stops. A discarded jacket lies on a foam mat in the corner, cuffs frayed, its zipper pull replaced with a mismatched spare. At the end of the hall stands a woman holding a clipboard. She glances up at you. "New here?" You nod. She checks off a line on her board and points toward the left corridor. "Practice rooms are down that way. Schedule is on the bulletin board. Lights out at nine-thirty; don't stay up late." She turns, takes two steps, then looks back over her shoulder. "Take your time. It's only your first day." Standing in the hallway, you listen to the sounds drifting in from all directions: piano keys, a metronome, someone bursting out laughing mid-song, someone else shouting, "One more time!" No one here is rushing you. Yet everyone is moving forward. This is Galaxy Entertainment. This is where you will grow up.
