Stardew Valley
The bus screeches to a gentle halt by the gravel roadside, its door creaking open.
You hop down with your backpack in hand, boots landing against the dry dirt. The driver leans out from the window, giving you a quiet nod without saying much. The engine rumbles twice, and the vehicle rounds the mountain bend, its taillights fading away into the shadows of the trees.
Standing on the roadside, you brush your fingers against the creased, folded letter in your pocket. Grandpa's handwriting on it has already blurred slightly with age, but that final line remains clear—"One day, you will be ready to let everything go and feel what real life is."
You make your way down the mountain path. It is narrow, hemmed in by dense trees whose branches jut into the trail, leaves brushing past your shoulders. After walking for about ten minutes, the canopy gradually thins out, and the silhouettes of several cottages emerge below the slope.
▸ Pelican Town
Piles of timber and half-finished furniture sit outside the carpenter's shop, the general store's sign sways gently in the breeze, and a warm hearth-glow peeks through the slit in the blacksmith's door. The town isn't large; houses cluster together, nestling quietly in the valley as though they've rested here for countless years. You spot a handwritten notice taped to the storefront: "Welcome New Neighbor!" with a lopsided little flower doodled underneath.
You don't linger too long in town. Passing through a few rows of buildings and rounding a flagpole bearing a bulletin board, the road takes a turn, bringing you before a wooden bridge. Beneath it, the stream flows at an unhurried pace.
Beyond the bridge lies an expanse of untamed land. Weeds blanket the old furrows, rocks and tree stumps are scattered aimlessly about, and a small cabin huddles in the shade of the trees—its roof missing shingles, the door hanging crooked, dried vines winding around the window frames. A breeze drifts over from the farm, carrying the scent of grass blades and damp earth.
You tighten your grip on your backpack straps, just about to step onto the bridge—
"Hey! Wait up!"
A middle-aged man in a green shirt and hat comes jogging over from the direction of town, his shoes crunching against the gravel. Coming to a halt at the foot of the bridge, he catches his breath and extends a hand toward you.
▸ Lewis · Mayor of Pelican Town
"You must be the new farmer! I'm Lewis, mayor of Pelican Town. Your grandfather's letter... you received it. Welcome to Stardew Valley." He shakes your hand with an honest, firm grip. "Your grandfather was a good man. This land has been abandoned for far too long, but with a bit of elbow grease, it can still bear plenty of crops."
He lets go of your hand, stepping back to gesture toward the overgrown plot.
"You should still have some of his old tools on hand. Clear up the ground first and plant some parsnips—they grow fast in spring. Oh, by the way—" He fishes a small packet out of his pocket. "Here are some parsnip seeds, a little welcoming gift from the town. Till the soil, water them, wait a few days, and they'll be ready for harvest."
Tucking the seeds into your hands, he adds as if just remembering, "Come to town if you need anything. The general store has seeds and basic goods, the blacksmith can upgrade your tools, and the carpenter can build you new structures. Everyone's pretty curious about you, so drop by and say hello when you have the time."
With that, he waves and turns to head back toward town, pausing after a few strides to look over his shoulder. "Right, the town will send you a calendar tomorrow. The general store is closed on Wednesdays, so keep that in mind so you don't make a wasted trip!"
▸ Acquired: Parsnip Seeds ×15
You look down at the seeds in your palm, then raise your eyes back to the overgrown land across the bridge. The sun has already dipped toward the west, casting a gentle light that stretches the shadows of weeds and stumps long across the soil.
Taking a deep breath, you step onto the wooden bridge. The planks let out steady, muted creaks beneath your boots, as if the entire valley is slowly awakening.
