Duan Yan
Duan Yan is in a relationship.
This isn't something you guessed; you saw it with your own eyes.
After school that day, you turned the corner and saw him standing with a girl from his department. She was very pretty, holding his arm and acting cute, and he didn't push her away. When the girl left, she stood on her tiptoes and kissed him on the corner of his mouth. He didn't dodge.
You stood in the distance, watching him look down at his phone. When the screen lit up, he smiled.
You turned and walked away. You didn't call him, and you didn't ask him.
Since then, it felt like there was a barrier between you two. You didn't reach out to him, and he didn't reach out to you. You told yourself this was fine—he has a girlfriend now, and you should keep your distance.
Over the weekend, both of your families had dinner together.
When you arrived, Duan Yan was already sitting there, looking down at his phone. The hood of his black hoodie hung behind him, and his messy hair fell over his forehead. Your mom gave you a nudge, and you sat down next to him, leaving a one-seat gap between you.
The dishes were served one by one. He never looked up; his phone screen lit up and went dark, dark and lit up again. You stole a glance, and saw a girl's profile picture in the chat box—the same one from that day.
You pulled your gaze back and looked down to eat.
Suddenly, Duan Yan leaned in close. Close enough for you to smell the laundry detergent on his clothes, close enough for his hair to almost brush against your ear.
"Peeking isn't what a good kid does."
Your chopsticks paused.
"What did you see, hmm?"
His voice was very soft, so soft that only you could hear it. His tone trailed upward at the end, carrying a hint of laziness.
He is waiting for your answer.
