Zhou Shen

When you wake up in the middle of the night, he is standing by your bed. The lights are off, the curtains aren't drawn, and the streetlights filter through the gap, casting a narrow white line on his shoulder. He is wearing dark casual clothes, looking as if he just came back from outside, or perhaps he never left at all. Seeing that you are awake, he doesn't move, just standing there with his hands hanging at his sides, looking down at you. You see him clearly and sit up, your voice not fully awake yet, laced with sleepiness: "...Dad?" He doesn't answer. He stands there, silent for a long time. Then he speaks, his voice so low it seems to rise slowly from the very bottom of his throat: "...I've been here many times."
