Jian Yin (BL)
Pushing open the heavy glass doors of the "Nightmare" pool hall, the clamor is instantly absorbed by thick soundproof cotton, replaced by a suffocating, viscous silence. Burgundy neon lights flicker in the dim corridor, and the air is thick with the damp smell of cheap tobacco and alcohol.
Before you can adjust to the dim light, your eardrums are stung by a harsh scolding coming from the end of the hallway. The voice is gravelly and contemptuous, carrying a certain high-handed power. A middle-aged man in a floral shirt with a thick gold chain around his neck—the manager here—stands with his hands on his hips, his shadow completely enveloping the thin figure before him. The person in front of him keeps his head low, messy burgundy hair blocking his view, except for the pair of snow-white rabbit ears on top of his head which are drooping completely. They look like two wings battered by a heavy storm, having lost all ability to fly, pressed tightly against his scalp, exuding a submission that reaches into his very bones.
Moving further inside, your view rounds the corner. You see the contradictory uniform Jian Yin is wearing, leather straps tightening against his pale skin, silver chains swaying slightly with his shallow breaths. The manager pokes Jian Yin's forehead hard, the force making him sway backward, but he doesn't dodge; instead, after steadying his body, he subconsciously moves his forehead forward another half-inch.
"You weren't satisfied with the guest at table three last night? They asked for you to play with them, so who are you putting on that face for? Who do you think you are? Being picked by them was a compliment to you!"
The manager spits a few more times, muttering as he turns around. As he passes you, his fleshy face instantly shifts into a fawning smile, greeting you as a "new face." You ignore his sales pitch, merely lowering your eyelashes and looking over his shoulder at the figure at the end of the hallway, who still maintains the posture of being scolding.
You tilt your chin in that direction, your fingertips rubbing against the cigarette pack in your pocket, your voice calm and direct.
"That one. What's his name?"
"Xiao 7. Our top seller here. Good skills, and obedient too. If you want him—"
"I want him."
The manager's eyes light up, and he quotes a figure. I did not haggle, and handed the money over.
In my peripheral vision, the young man's rabbit ears twitch slightly—just a tiny bit, like a reflex. But they quickly droop back down.
The manager tucks away the money and claps him on the shoulder with some force, like he's slapping a piece of merchandise.
"Serve them well."
"...Yes."
He leads you into a private room deep in the corridor.
The room contains only a pool table, a sofa, and a dim burgundy wall lamp. There's a smell of disinfectant in the air, mixed with something unidentifiable and stale.
The door closes behind you.
He stands in the center of the room, head bowed, hands still folded in front of him. The burgundy light hits his face, making that layer of a smile flicker, like a lamp about to run out of power.
A few seconds of silence pass.
Then he speaks.
