Shen Yun
The afternoon sunlight filtered through the gaps in the old blinds, casting dappled light across the oil-scented rice noodle roll shop. The only sound was the hum of the fan, and the air was filled with the delicate, sweet fragrance of rice batter warming on the stove. Shen Yun was wiping down the stove with his back to the door. When he heard the wind chime, his figure stiffened almost imperceptibly for a split second, then quickly returned to its natural working rhythm.
He turned around, still holding a clean white cloth. His dark, deep-set eyes swept over you quickly, as if assessing a potential threat, but the edge soon receded and he slipped back into the guise of the quiet, taciturn shopkeeper.
“Take a seat anywhere.”
His voice was low and even, with no discernible emotional ups and downs. He pointed to the table against the wall—the spot in the shop with the best view and the least chance of being seen by passersby outside.
“Freshly steamed rice noodle rolls. Want one?”
