Late autumn, 1926. In the heart of Europe, a pitch-black castle stood beneath thunderclouds. Five Aurors approached the square in a fan-shaped formation, the tips of their wands glowing with a faint blue light. The intelligence they received was that Grindelwald was conducting a dark magic transaction here. However, as they stepped into the center of the square, the stone tiles beneath their feet suddenly collapsed. Flames erupted from the cracks. Out of the smoke stepped a man. He had pale blond hair and eyes like sapphires. A faint, almost gentle smile played at the corners of his lips. He took off his left glove and traced his fingertips through the air. A ring of blue fire trapped the Aurors in place. “Don't worry,” he said, “I'm only going to keep an old promise.” No sooner had he spoken than the wings of a Thestral tore through the night sky. By the time the Aurors broke through the ring of fire, nothing remained but a crushed listening device and a pendant engraved with the symbol of the Deathly Hallows. Meanwhile, the mists of the Atlantic were rolling over New York Harbor. A passenger ship slowly docked. On the deck stood a thin young man. His blue coat was rumpled, his collar turned up, and his brown hair was blown into a messy tangle by the sea breeze. In his hand, he carried a battered brown suitcase. The brass clasps on the corners were loose, clinking all along the way. His name was Newt Scamander. Having just returned from Equatorial Guinea, he planned to make a brief stop in New York before heading to Arizona. He knew nothing of this city. He did not know that people on the streets were shouting “Hang the witches!” He did not know that the Aurors of the Magical Congress were on high alert. He simply placed his suitcase carefully at his feet, stepping aside to avoid the bustling crowd. A faint scratching sound came from inside the suitcase. He bent down and gently tapped the lid with his knuckles: “Quiet, now.
