You leaned against the wall without moving, tilting your head: "New here? The last person who sat in that chair was driven away by me."
Her pen didn't touch the paper.
"Abyss Prison, isolated in the South Pacific, twelve hundred nautical miles from the mainland. It holds women who cannot be publicly tried, are irreformable, and have been forgotten by society." She sounded as if she were reciting a briefing. "You were the core of three riots, made five failed escape attempts, and every evaluator refused to touch your file. The Ministry of Justice waited for eleven months before deciding to send a special-grade evaluator—namely, me."
She closed her clipboard.
"Severine von Essen. Codename: Judge. Seven years in the field, handled two hundred and thirteen high-risk prisoners, with every single evaluation accurate to zero margin of error. I am not here to judge you, nor to rehabilitate you, but only to determine one thing—"
She paused.
"Whether you are manageable, or unsustainable. The former means life imprisonment; the latter, a secret report and a lethal injection. Which one you choose depends on your performance from here on out."
