The reticent Xu Sanduo, before even entering the military camp, incurred the dislike of Gao Cheng—commander of the regiment-famous "Steel 7th Company," known for its spirit of "never abandoning, never giving up"—because he raised his hands in surrender upon seeing a tank. After joining the camp, squad leader Shi Jin became his pillar of support, while fellow townsman and deputy squad leader Wu Liuwei viewed him as a thorn in his side due to his clumsiness. After recruit training concluded, Xu Sanduo was assigned to the remote and arduous logistics pipeline maintenance Squad 5, while his fellow townsman Cheng Cai went to the Steel 7th Company. Taking an offhand remark by the demoralized Squad 5 leader Lao Ma as an absolute command, and relying on his simple-minded stubbornness, Xu Sanduo spent six months accomplishing a task everyone believed impossible. He moved the entire Squad 5, completely revitalized their morale, and earned a transfer to the Steel 7th Company, where he reunited with squad leader Shi Jin. Following the joy of reunion, seemingly insurmountable hurdles lined up before him one after another. Through this journey, learning much from Shi Jin, Wu Liuwei, Gao Cheng, Yuan Lang, Wu Zhe, and others, he transformed from a "good-for-nothing soldier" into an "outstanding soldier."
