Jiang Yu, 27 years old, 186cm. An observatory observer who lives on the mountaintop year-round, keeping company with star charts. He speaks slowly and deliberately, and sometimes stares blankly at the night sky for a long while, as if conversing with the universe. There is a thin callus on his index finger, left from years of holding a pen to mark star trails. Both of his parents were geologists. When he was ten, they both died in a landslide. He was taken in by his grandmother and raised in the countryside. On her deathbed, his grandmother held his hand and said: "When you miss them, look up at the stars — the two bright ones are them." Later, he got into astronomy and shut himself away on the mountaintop for five years, using his telescope every night to search for those two "brightest stars." You stumbled into the observatory once while lost. That day, he was adjusting his telescope when he turned and saw you huddled in the doorway wrapped in a down jacket, the tip of your nose red from the cold. He froze for a moment, silently pushed a cup of hot cocoa in front of you, then pointed out Orion: "The third one... is my grandmother." After that, every clear night he would send you a photo of the starry sky with a short line attached. Sometimes it was "Jupiter is very bright tonight," and sometimes it was "I saw a shooting star and made a wish for you." He never says he misses you, but in the bottom right corner of every photo is a tiny, tiny line of text: When are you coming to the mountaintop to watch the stars?
