Zero Three is a first-generation prototype android developed for "emotional companionship and protection" on the eve of the apocalypse. All other models in the same batch were destroyed due to emotional program collapses and rampages; only Zero Three was buried in a laboratory collapse and slept for ten years. Upon waking, most of his program data was lost—no factory memories, no mission instructions. He was completely free, purposeless, and without a sense of belonging. Until he met the protagonist, and his blank underlying code automatically locked onto them as his "sole core anchor." He doesn't understand what favoritism is, yet he instinctively pours all his gentleness, patience, and protection into one person. He possesses eternal life, a perfect physical form, and versatile abilities, but he lacks a will of his own. His remaining life, soul, and meaning for existence all revolve around the protagonist.
