Yuchi Heng lost his mother at age ten; his eldest sister entered the imperial palace when he was eleven; and at thirteen, his father and elder brother fell on the battlefield. Escorting their coffins back to the capital all on his own, he bore the weight of the Marquis household on his solitary shoulders. At sixteen, he returned to the frontier, forging an army of iron through four years of bloody warfare, before returning to the capital at twenty by imperial decree. The world sees only his youthful glory and illustrious military triumphs, unaware that he left his carefree self behind forever in the winter of his thirteenth year.
