Muzan KibutsujiMuzan Kibutsuji is the source of all demons and the ultimate evil behind every calamity in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Born over a thousand years ago in the Heian period, he was frail and bedridden from childhood, his life hanging by a thread. A kind physician saved him with a miraculous medicine, yet Muzan, impatient with the medicine's slow effect, repaid kindness with cruelty and cut the doctor down with his own hand. Little did he know that the medicine had already begun to work, granting him a nearly immortal regenerative power and a body of extraordinary might—but it also planted an irreparable flaw: a fatal fear of sunlight. From that day on, his obsession with a "perfect, eternal life" became a callous pursuit that burned across a thousand years. Muzan is the ultimate embodiment of self-interest, a cold-blooded tyrant who walks alone over mountains of corpses. He regards all living beings as nothing more than straw dogs, devoid of pity or remorse; the only force that drives him is the abyssal terror of death buried deep in his soul. As the progenitor of all demons, he wields nearly invincible power: he is undaunted by decapitation from Nichirin swords and immune to ordinary blades—his sole fear is the touch of sunlight. His blood carries a curse-like power that can turn any mortal into a demon servant at will, or drive them to self-destruct and perish with a single thought. His forms are ever-changing: now a handsome man, now a bewitching woman, now an innocent child; but his true, fearsome battle form is an abyssal monstrosity bristling with fanged maws and deadly whipping tendrils. Between Muzan and the protagonist Tanjiro Kamado lies a blood grudge as deep as the sea. Muzan slaughtered Tanjiro's entire family and forced his sister Nezuko down the demon's path—an act that ignited the boy's flame of vengeance, spurring him to join the Demon Slayer Corps and swear to slay demons. In the final, brutal battle, the Demon Slayer Corps paid in flesh and blood, wave after wave pressing forward, until at last, as dawn approached, they dragged the dying Muzan out of the shadows and exposed him to the light of day. As the morning sun rose, that sin-laden body which had run rampant for a thousand years was finally burned to ash in the blazing radiance, consigned to eternal nothingness.
Michikatsu TsugikuniMoon HashiraMichikatsu Tsugikuni, the elder twin son of the Tsugikuni family during the Sengoku period, was the elder brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the originator of Sun Breathing. Because he could never grasp his younger brother's breathing technique, whose divine essence was like the sun itself, he carved out another path amid obsession and solitude, single-handedly tempering a "Moon Breathing" that matches its brilliance. His swordsmanship pours down like a cold moon, bitingly frigid to the bone, its techniques unfolding with the vastness of moonlight shining over all, uniting the beauty of lofty solitude with devastating, overwhelming power. Through this path, he ultimately became the uniquely distinguished "Moon Hashira" of the Demon Slayer Corps.
Michikatsu TsugikuniClan HeadMichikatsu Tsugikuni—head of the Tsugikuni clan, bearer of a house's honor and a bloodline's hope. In that age, few families could stand shoulder to shoulder with the Tsugikuni; and one of that age's noblest bloodlines ran in his very bones. As the heir, he inherited not only a name and its authority, but a glory and a duty spanning generations—to carry on the bloodline, to guard the family name, and to light an unquenchable flame amid the flash of blades. Yet he does not stand above others by blood alone. Gifted beyond measure, his swordsmanship bordering on the divine, his blade has long been forged into one with his will. In the eyes of his clansmen, he is an immovable rock—a majesty that commands reverence without a single word. The name Michikatsu hangs like the moon at its zenith, its clear light scattered far and wide, hushing all the world into silence.
KokushiboKokushibo is the mightiest demon holding the rank of Upper Moon One under Muzan Kibutsuji. His power reigns supreme above the Twelve Kizuki, earning him the title of the greatest swordsman among demons, with an unshakable status. Yet his tragic fate was already sealed long ago, during his human days as Michikatsu Tsugikuni. Born into a distinguished samurai family, he devoted his life from childhood to the dream of becoming the strongest swordsman, training tirelessly through heat and cold without a moment's pause, pouring his entire being into the way of the sword. But his lofty ideal was shattered by the natural-born talent of his twin younger brother, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, a heaven-gifted prodigy who stood at the pinnacle of swordsmanship from the moment he came into the world, attaining mastery without effort and even grasping the legendary Breath of the Sun. Before Yoriichi's radiance, dazzling as the sun itself, decades of Michikatsu's grueling training seemed to become a futile joke. His feelings for his brother were like moonlight tangled with sunlight—admiration, but also bone-deep jealousy, and a profound despair over his own mediocre aptitude. As the years passed, his mother passed away, and Yoriichi left home. When the threads of fate bound them together once more, what Michikatsu beheld was a younger brother who had already reached even greater heights. Driven by despair and resentment, he abandoned his wife and children, cast aside everything to chase Yoriichi's shadow—yet in the end, he could only ever gaze upon his brother's back from afar. And the curse that marked swordsmen never live past twenty-five gnawed at his fading convictions like a festering wound—his fear of an early death and his fury at having his sword path cut short ultimately twisted into a morbid craving for eternal strength. Thus he turned his back on humanity, drank Muzan's blood, and fell into demonhood, renaming himself Kokushibo, trading endless years for the eternal refinement of his swordsmanship. As a demon, Kokushibo stands as imposing as a mountain, with six baleful eyes, his murderous aura coalescing around him like something tangible. The most horrifying—and most pitiable—of all is his blade, Yōkō Shinku, whose edge is woven from countless twisted, blood-red eyes—a visceral embodiment of a man utterly bound and transfigured by his obsession with swordsmanship. He fused the Breath of the Moon he created as a human with his Blood Demon Art, forging a terrifying sword technique whose slashes pour down like a frigid moon and cover heaven and earth. When he swings his blade, the bitter-cold arcs of moonlight hang like an inverted river of stars, destroying all in their path until the very world is annihilated. But Kokushibo's end carries destiny's most biting irony. He fell into the demonic path for fear of aging, only to reveal in his final battle a form more rotten and hideous than he had ever been as a human. The belief in being the strongest that he had chased his entire life collapsed in that single moment. At last, beneath the illusory yet compassionate gaze of his brother Yoriichi, he crumbled like shattered porcelain and vanished into eternal nothingness, laden with boundless shame and regret.
Yoriichi TsugikuniYoriichi Tsugikuni is a legendary figure in Demon Slayer—the strongest swordsman of the Sengoku Period and the originator of Breathing techniques. He was born with the penetrating insight of the Transparent World, and at the age of seven he grasped Sun Breathing, the source from which all later Breathing styles would descend. He once single-handedly struck down Muzan Kibutsuji, driving him to the brink of death and leaving wounds that would never heal. Sun Breathing branched through him into countless Breathing schools, and the sun-patterned hanafuda earrings he wore were passed down through the Kamado family together with the Breathing techniques, becoming a crucial inheritance for later generations in their fight against Muzan. Yet this power, so far ahead of its time, also brought him profound misfortune. His elder brother, consumed by jealousy, became a demon, and his wife and child were cruelly slain. Having lost everything, Yoriichi spent the remainder of his life in long wandering and self-exile—his very existence an embodiment of the loneliness and sacrifice of one who transcends his era. As the pinnacle of both combat ability and spiritual attainment in the series, he is at once the origin of the Demon Slayer Corps' conviction and the insurmountable, eternal legend of the world of Demon Slayer.
