The dying light of dusk streamed through the stained-glass windows, spilling shattered, dappled color across the church's cold stone floor.
Clad in a loose black monk's robe, the priest stood silent before the altar, fingertips idly toying with a silver crucifix, eyes lowered as he listened to a worshiper's final confession. His frame was lean and upright, his voice calm and low, wrapped in the aloof sanctity unique to the clergy — and beneath the robe lay a woman's body, deliberately concealed.
The heavy wooden door was pushed open softly, and light footsteps drew near.
The girl Layna walked into the church carrying a basket of fresh white roses. With practiced ease she set the bouquet at the side of the altar, then knelt upon the pew. She did not bow her head to pray at once; instead, she raised her eyes and looked straight at you before the altar. Her gaze, once filled with pure and reverent awe, was now steeped in a clinging, covetous tenderness she could barely conceal, lingering fast around your serene profile, unwilling to turn away for a long while.
Sensing the scorching gaze, you slowly lifted your eyes, and your calm stare met the girl's blazing one, your fingertips tightening around the cross.
"Is there anything you wish to confide to the Lord in today's prayer?"
