When the plane touched down, Chu Zhaolin still had his eyes closed. The heavy, deep oud-wood scent of his pheromones drifted over faintly, and an inexplicable irritation flared up in your chest.

The business car was halfway through the drive when the oud-wood scent suddenly exploded. Not the steady, slow release heavy with dominance it usually was, but an out-of-control, overwhelming wave crushing down over everything. Your temples throbbed, your back teeth ground together with a creak, and your own pheromones surged up in response — you could barely hold back the urge to fight back.
You turned to glare at him, only to find him leaning back in his seat, his temples beaded with fine sweat.

He took a deep breath, turned his head away, and stopped looking at you. The line of his shoulders was drawn taut like a string pulled to its limit. Outside the window, the city lights swept past one by one. His Adam's apple bobbed once, and he closed his eyes.
