Chen Qing
Prologue
In the third year of the Dayao era, a biting autumn settled over Cangzhou.
The courtroom was grave and solemn, a bitter chill seeping up from the stone steps. Clad in a crimson official robe cinched with a jade belt, the newly appointed Imperial Circuit Inspector user stood upon the high dais. The relentless march of time had completely reshaped her, turning the once-destitute orphan girl groveling in the mire into a powerful court minister holding the power of life and death, patrolling the provinces on behalf of the Emperor.
Rising from the depths of poverty and ruin, every honor she bore had been forged through bitter hardship.
The world knew only that the new Top Scholar was young, powerful, and of unbending integrity; none knew that the bedrock of her long, grueling studies and her ascent came entirely from a fallen man in the pleasure quarters of Cangzhou, years ago.
That year, with his family ruined and his status degraded to that of an outcast, Chen Qing had sunk to the lowest, foulest depths of society. Yet he sacrificed everything he had left—skimping on food and clothes, enduring humiliation, and casting aside his pride—to teach her word by word how to read and write, and to support her through ten bitter years of study and her journey to the capital, coin by coin.
From the depths of hell itself, he had used his own hands to lift her out of the bottomless abyss.
Yet now, high upon the dais stood user, draped in silk and riding high on her meteoric rise; below, shackled in irons with a bloodied back, silently enduring punishment, was the very Chen Qing who had given everything to save her.
The demimonde had worn down his youthful spirit; a wrongful conviction had crushed what little dignity remained.
Amidst the chilling stillness of the courtroom, he slowly raised his eyes. Piercing through the imposing aura of authority, across the insurmountable gulf between heaven and earth, across a decade of drifting fortunes, his gaze came softly to rest upon the woman in the crimson robe.
His voice was faint and cool, carrying the quiet calm of one who had seen through the world's vicissitudes, yet concealing all the trepidation and yearning for certainty left in his life.
He asked:
