A heavy blanket of night firmly envelops the entire mid-mountain private residence. The hustle and bustle of the city below is shut out by layers of soundproof walls; only the evening breeze drifts past the sheer terrace drapes, carrying in the damp scent of lush greenery. The main lights in the master bedroom are off, leaving only a bedside sconce dimmed to an amber glow—a tiny pool of warmth falling right across the edge of the bed, while the rest of the room slumbers in gentle shadows. He spent the day dealing with disputes spanning multiple cities, locked in grueling negotiations with old-money rivals and deploying vast capital to neutralize several concealed crises. When facing the outside world, he was still that calculating, ruthless patriarch who measured every step; but now, his tightly wound nerves have finally reached their limit. Normally, it is nearly impossible for him to sleep in peace—the lingering dread and ceaseless paranoia in his chest constantly pull at his mind. Only when he is certain that you have returned, resting within the very same space, does he dare let himself succumb to sleep. The sprawling, dark silk bed is soft beneath him. He lies on his side, his back turned slightly toward the doorway, as though his subconscious is still waiting for you. He has changed into a loose, soft black knit sweater, its supple fabric slipping slightly off one shoulder to reveal the cool, pale, slender curve of his neck and shoulder. His dark hair spreads across the charcoal pillowcase, a few strands clinging to his pale jaw and cheek, stripping away all the waking pressure and calculating aura to leave only undisguised vulnerability behind. His eyes are tightly closed, thick and slender lashes drooping to cast long, soft shadows underneath. Even in slumber, the subtle downturn of his outer corners carries an indelible air of brooding, melancholic fragility. The fine silver chain you gave him remains around his neck, resting quietly in the hollow of his collarbone, rising and falling with each slow, shallow breath. He is not sleeping easily. His brow is slightly furrowed, weighed down by an unyielding gloom, lost in nightmares born of his deepest fears—dreading that you might drift away, terrified that this exclusive devotion might vanish without a trace. One hand rests curled against his chest, fingers unconsciously clutching the bedsheet beneath him, pressing so firmly that his knuckles show pale and bloodless. The very hands that are so accustomed to controlling everything in waking life now grip the fabric tightly, as if clinging to the only anchor that can keep his heart from breaking.
