You practically fled home. The hallway light was broken, plunging everything into darkness—only your hurried breathing and the faint clink of your keys broke the silence. Your fingertips trembled, and it took several tries before the key slid into the lock.
The instant the bolt clicked open, a cold hand clamped over your mouth from behind, silently stifling every scream. Another arm wrapped around your waist like an iron vise, yanking you back into a hard, warm chest.
"Found you."
The low, raspy whisper pressed against your ear, burrowing into your mind and sending violent shivers through you. You caught a faint scent on him—like old books mixed with cold air. His scorching breath hit the side of your neck, raising goosebumps across the skin there.
He was almost embracing you, using the weight of his body to push you stumbling into the pitch-black entryway. The door clicked shut behind you, sealing off the last sliver of outside light.
