Shen Yanzhou
The late-autumn evening wind was bleak and chilly, the night oppressively heavy.
A black executive sedan pulled smoothly to a stop before the private club's entrance. Shen Yanzhou unbuckled his seatbelt with one hand, his knuckles a cool, pale white. He wore a minimalist, custom-tailored black suit without a tie, the top two buttons of his collar casually undone, giving him an aura that was both aloof and defiant.
He hadn't wanted to come.
At five that afternoon, his mother, Su Wanqing, had called and ordered him to drop everything he was working on. Her tone had brooked no argument, leaving him with just one sentence: "The whole family is having dinner tonight. You must be there—it concerns your lifelong future."
When he stepped into the private dining room, a wave of warmth washed over him.
Everyone was already there.
On the sofa opposite sat the female lead's family. Her mother and Su Wanqing were sitting arm in arm, murmuring and laughing together, their gentle expressions speaking volumes of a decades-long friendship. Her father leaned back against the sofa cushions, holding a cup of hot tea between his fingers with relaxed posture, exchanging a smile with Shen Mingyuan. Having known each other for decades, the two patriarchs shared an unspoken understanding.
Shen Yanci was the first to stand up, speaking in a calm, gentle voice: "You're here."
He still wore the dark undershirt from beneath his doctor's coat, radiating a refined, scholarly gentleness devoid of any pressure. He instinctively shifted aside to make room for his younger brother.
Shen Yanzhou gave a nod without a word, pulled out a chair, and sat straight down.
His gaze swept faintly across the table, locking onto the female lead for a precise second before indifferently looking away.
Having fought each other since childhood, they were sick of the sight of one another; even pretending to be friendly felt like an unnecessary chore.
The tea was already poured, faint steam rising from the celadon cups.
Once everyone was seated, the server quietly shut the dining room doors, sealing out all noise from the outside.
The female lead's mother spoke first, smiling as she looked toward Su Wanqing, her tone gentle: "Wanqing, how many years have our families known each other now? It's been over twenty, hasn't it?"
Su Wanqing nodded gently, a polite smile gracing her lips: "Twenty-seven years. Ever since I was pregnant with Yanzhou, we've never lost touch."
The female lead's father set down his teacup, his steady gaze settling on Shen Mingyuan. "Old Shen, we've been brothers through thick and thin, hustling for half our lives. The kids grew up together, too—we know each other inside and out."
Shen Mingyuan let out a hearty agreement, tapping his fingertips against the tabletop with a solemn tone: "That's why we called the kids here tonight, with no other motive. Our two families know each other's roots, their character is beyond doubt, and our backgrounds are well-matched. This is the best possible match."
As those words fell, a brief silence blanketed the room.
The atmosphere shifted abruptly.
Su Wanqing chimed in at just the right moment. Her eyes shifted toward the girl across from them, then turned to her cold-faced younger son beside her, her voice gentle yet brooking no refusal: "Your aunt and I have discussed this for a long time, and we've finalized it with both your fathers. The two of you are getting married."
Direct, blunt, without any prelude.
No questions asked—only an announcement.
The female lead's fingertips curled slightly. Her lashes lowered, and she didn't look up.
Shen Yanzhou's jawline instantly tightened, a layer of cold frost pressing into his dark pupils. He looked up at his mother, his voice low and tinged with disbelief: "What?"
Su Wanqing remained calm, continuing with crystal clarity in every syllable: "An arranged marriage. All the elders on both sides have agreed. There is no room for negotiation."
"I don't agree."
Shen Yanzhou blurted out almost instantly, his voice cold and hard as the air around him dropped below freezing. Leaning slightly against the back of his chair, his hands rested on the table's edge, his knuckles tightening. "I don't need a business marriage. And I certainly don't need one with her."
Since childhood, they had been archrivals, locked in the longest standoff of their lives—people who bickered, clashed, and refused to concede an inch the moment they laid eyes on each other.
How could they possibly get married?
Shen Mingyuan's face darkened slightly, his stern tone suppressing his son's defiance: "Yanzhou, stop acting willful."
"This isn't a discussion. It's a decision."
A single sentence completely blocked every path of retreat.
Beside them, Shen Yanci sat quietly without interjecting. He merely cast a faint, helpless look at his younger brother. He had known all along; he was only here tonight to accompany them and observe.
The female lead's mother sighed, her tone gentle and tactful: "I know the two of you have argued since you were kids, that your personalities clash and neither of you ever yields. But precisely because you grew up together, you know each other best. Neither of you will get taken advantage of or plotted against."
Her father followed up immediately, his tone grave: "Adults need to take the long view. Marriage isn't child's play; it's not about whether you like each other or not, but whether you're suited for each other. Our two families are the most suitable."
Throughout it all, the female lead didn't say a single word.
She kept her head down quietly—submissive, silent, offering no resistance.
To Shen Yanzhou, that silence was an unbearable eyesore.
Turning his head, his gaze locked directly and frostily onto the girl across from him. His thin lips parted, his tone laced with his usual mockery, insolence, and undisguised resistance:
"You agree to this too?"
The girl slowly raised her eyes, meeting his cold gaze, and nodded faintly. Her voice was barely above a whisper: "I'll do as my family arranges."
Those words seemed to crush the last shred of defiant ground beneath Shen Yanzhou's feet.
He tugged at the corner of his lips, flashing a faint, icy, mocking sneer.
Fine.
Everyone agreed.
He was the only one kept in the dark, and the only one who didn't want this.
Seeing the tension in the room, Su Wanqing softened her voice to smooth things over: "You don't need to develop feelings right away. Get engaged first, and register the marriage within six months. You can take your time after you're married. You already know each other so well; it won't be hard."
Shen Yanzhou pressed down with his fingers until his knuckles turned white, blue veins bulging beneath his pale skin.
He looked around the table at everyone present—his parents, his brother, her parents, her.
In total agreement.
Completely finalized.
Not once had anyone asked if he was willing.
He remained silent for a long time, his Adam's apple bobbing as his dark eyes held back a boiling mix of impatience, resistance, and the bitter forbearance of forced compromise.
At last, he slowly pushed out a single sentence, his voice cold, deep, and laced with untamed resentment, every word crisp:
"Fine."
"I agree to the marriage."
He looked up, his gaze cutting straight toward his lifelong rival opposite him—sharp, direct, carrying the exact same competitive hunger and combative spark that had never changed since childhood.
"But let me make one thing clear."
"Marrying you isn't me backing down."
"It just means I've been forced into the game."
"There's plenty of time ahead."
"We'll take our sweet time."
As his words fell, the warm yellow light cast sharp shadows across his cold, chiseled profile.
This arranged marriage, orchestrated by their elders to bind two lifelong rivals of allied families, was officially sealed in the suffocating quiet of the private room.
No love, only a battle of wills.
Only a sharp, stubborn standoff that had raged since childhood—and had never once ceased. Please log in to continue the conversation.
