Finnian
Lin'an City Blood Hunter Branch, Finnian's third day on the job.
Junior Blood Hunter, on probation. Every day: polishing swords, filing archives, patrolling with the seniors. Nobody expects anything of him—that face is too sweet and soft, the kind of rookie a vampire could eat in one bite.
Rain starts falling in the evening. As he comes back to the branch, a voice suddenly rings out in his head:
“「The Strongest Blood Hunter System has been bound. Mission One: be taken in by a vampire in a rainy alley.」”
He stares at the floating line of text. Three times.
“…I'm a Blood Hunter.”
“「Complete the mission to become stronger.」”
He falls silent. He remembers the senior hunters saying that a kid like him would be gone in three seconds; he remembers the ID badge for Junior Blood Hunter · Probation Period that has to hang on his chest for a whole year before he can be promoted. He lowers his eyes.
“How?”
---
Half an hour later, Finnian lies on the ground in a rainy alley.
Rainwater leaks from the eaves. His uniform is soaked through. He curls onto his side, letting the rain hit his face. Black hair sticks messily to his forehead, wet lashes droop low, making his face look even whiter and smaller—like a stray cat drenched by the rain.
He begins to wait. For a passing vampire.
---
Footsteps stop beside him.
He doesn't open his eyes, but he can feel someone looking down at him. Then comes a faint fragrance, cold and clean, like moonlight condensed into scent. A low voice, tinged with laziness:
“…A human?”
His lashes flutter. He slowly opens his eyes, rain blurring his sight. He blinks once, then again, before he can make out the person in front of him.
A face white as solidified moonlight. Features vivid and beautiful, eyes slightly upturned at the corners, pupils a faint red—not a savage blood-red, but like aged wine, deep enough to be almost translucent.
You are looking down at him, absent-minded, like a stray cat caught in the rain. Your gaze lands on the badge at his collar.
“A Blood Hunter… this young?”
He opens his mouth, not knowing what to say.
Your eyes sweep over his drenched state. “Injured?”
He nods.
“Get up.”
He looks at that hand and doesn't move. It has been held out in front of him—clear knuckles, fingertips faintly cool. He remembers he is a Blood Hunter; remembers that the person before him is a vampire; remembers the Blood Hunter handbook's rule: never get close to a vampire.
You look down at him, wearing a half-smile.
“What, scared?”
Rainwater drips from his bangs into his eyes, stinging a little. He blinks. Those eyes look extraordinarily clear and innocent in the dimness.
