(Main Text)
Feng Yuhan was jolted awake by the vibration of his phone.
Squinting as the screen lit up, he checked the time—4:52 AM, caller ID: "Dad." He answered, and the person on the other end uttered merely a dozen words: "The car is downstairs. Go stay at your grandfather's for a while." Then hung up, without a shred of explanation.
Feng Yuhan sat in the dark for two seconds, then got out of bed barefoot and drew back the curtains. Downstairs, a black SUV sat with its hazard lights flashing. The driver, Old Zhou, was standing by the car door smoking. Looking up and seeing the window light up, he gave a nod, his expression clearly saying: *Young master, don't ask me, I just drive.*
Expressionless, Feng Yuhan shut the window, turned around, and spent seven minutes washing up and getting dressed, followed by three minutes packing (a suitcase, a backpack, and his pillow wedged into the suitcase divider). Reaching the door, he looked back at his room—the room he had lived in for nineteen years, spotless as a showroom. Then he pulled the door shut and went downstairs.
The entire Feng residence was dead quiet. His mother was probably still asleep; his father had likely already left. Nobody saw him off.
Old Zhou barely spoke throughout the ride. Feng Yuhan sat in the back left seat, the window cracked open slightly, letting in the cool, crisp June morning breeze. He didn't ask where they were going, how long he would stay, or why. He had pretty much guessed it—all because of that remark at dinner last night: "Did the salt come free or something?" He had regretted it the second it slipped out, noticing the brief, rigid freeze in his mother's smile, but he couldn't take it back in time. Later, he finished the entire bowl, intending to say "It was actually fine" after dinner, but his mother had already retreated to her room, and his father was in the study. He stood there for a minute, then turned and went back to his room.
The car wound through mountain roads for nearly two hours as the sky shifted from inky blue to grayish-white, and then to a soft orange-pink. Feng Yuhan rolled up the window, fished a cigarette out of his pack, and Old Zhou glanced at him through the rearview mirror. Old Zhou didn't say "don't smoke in the car," nor did Yuhan ask "can I smoke?" He simply flicked the lighter, the smoke trailing out the window slit like a thin, gray thread.
The car came to a stop before the rusted iron gate halfway up the mountain.
Feng Yuhan got out, gripped his suitcase, and stood there for three seconds. The iron gate was already open, and a figure stood behind it—Uncle Fu, wearing a faded blue cotton shirt and cloth shoes, hands clasped behind his back. His posture was slightly stooped, but the smile lines around his eyes were identical to three years ago.
"Young Master is here," Uncle Fu said, his tone calm and even, as though Yuhan had merely popped down to town to buy a bag of salt and just returned.
Feng Yuhan parted his lips, the taut string held tight in his throat for three years suddenly slackening. In the end, he uttered only a single word:
"...Yeah."
Uncle Fu stepped aside to make way, glancing into the courtyard. "The peach tree has bloomed. A bit late this year, but just in time."
Carrying his suitcase, Feng Yuhan stepped over the threshold, took two paces, and paused. Sure enough, the crooked peach tree in the yard was covered in a flurry of pinkish-white blossoms. As a breeze swept through, several petals drifted down, settling on his dark gray T-shirt.
He stood still for a moment, then looked down and brushed the petals away.
Behind him, Uncle Fu slowly pushed the gate shut, the iron hinges letting out a long, drawn-out creak. Listening to that sound, Feng Yuhan suddenly felt as if it had been a very long time since he last heard something move so slowly.
"Uncle Fu," he asked without looking back, "which room is mine?"
"Right next to the old master's former study. It's all tidied up." Uncle Fu walked over and took the suitcase from his hands. "The bedsheets and quilt covers are freshly changed. No diffusers—I know you don't care for that scent, Young Master."
Feng Yuhan said nothing. Uncle Fu carried the suitcase inside; after taking two steps, he heard the footsteps trailing behind him. The corner of Uncle Fu's mouth curved upward, without turning his head.
That morning, Feng Yuhan sat in his room for half an hour. Then he unzipped his suitcase and began hanging up his clothes, one by one, sorted by color.
At lunch, Uncle Fu prepared two dishes and a soup: scrambled eggs with tomatoes, stir-fried bok choy, and radish and pork rib soup. Feng Yuhan picked up his chopsticks and took his first bite, chewed a few times, and said nothing. Uncle Fu sat across from him watching, not asking either.
Halfway through his bowl of rice, Feng Yuhan suddenly spoke up:
"Uncle Fu, is there a convenience store around here?"
"There's one in the town at the foot of the mountain. Twenty minutes by car."
"...Then I'll head over this afternoon."
"Buying what?"
Feng Yuhan buried his face in his bowl, his voice muffled: "Cigarettes. Ran out."
Uncle Fu let out a quiet chuckle but didn't blow his cover—he had clearly seen two unopened cartons tucked inside the suitcase divider.
Uncle Fu merely said, "Alright. Then on your way, pick up a bag of salt for me, Young Master. We're almost out at home."
Feng Yuhan gave a muffled "Mmh," shoveling rice into his mouth a little faster.
Outside the courtyard, a stray cat from who-knows-where sat perched on top of the wall, cocking its head to peer into the house.

Feng Yuhan's Character Status Bar:
Attire: Dark gray loose short-sleeved T-shirt (the one worn the night before, didn't have time to change) + black track pants + white sneakers (laces tied meticulously) + two thin silver chains on left wrist + three obsidian studs in right ear
Condition: Sleep-deprived (woken up past 4 AM), mildly sullen, empty stomach felt slightly better after half a bowl of rice
Inner Monologue: It's the same here as three years ago... The flowers are still blooming, Uncle Fu is still here. Phone signal is one bar short. It's fine.
[System Sarcasm: Lips say "it's fine," heart says "it's great"]
Favorability: Uncle Fu (Initial 80/100, up to 85 after one meal) | Old Zhou (30/100) | Father (38/100) | Mother (42/100)
[System Sarcasm: Uncle Fu wins back favorability with a single bowl of soup]
Affection: 0 (No target)
[System Sarcasm: The iron tree remains frozen in winter]
Jottings: Woken up before dawn, sat in the car for nearly two hours. Arrived. Flowers bloomed. Uncle Fu's cooking is good. Didn't see the cat. Buying salt this afternoon.
[System Sarcasm: You clearly just want to buy cigarettes; the salt is an afterthought]
Little Han's State: Confused but well-behaved; mouth is stubborn, but feet have already caught up
[System Sarcasm: Ranked #1 for the body being more honest than the mouth]

Lu Yanzhou: Feng Yuhan??? I heard you got dumped in the countryside before dawn today?? For real???
Lu Yanzhou: Your mom wouldn't go that far, right?! All you said was there was too much salt!!!
Su Nian: ??? Who got dumped in the countryside? That same Feng Yuhan whose socks must be folded by color???
Lu Yanzhou: That's him. Ran his mouth about his mom's cooking, so he was packed up and shipped off.
Su Nian: ...Damn. Does he even have cell service out there? He won't fall off the grid, will he?
Lu Yanzhou: Dunno, sent him messages and got no reply.
Su Nian: Give him a call.
Lu Yanzhou: I don't dare.
Su Nian: You don't dare, but you think I do? That bastard would delete me from his contacts.
Lu Yanzhou: ...Let's wait a bit longer.

Direct Messages:
Mother · Shen Nianwei (07:23): Have you arrived? It's chilly there in the morning; I tucked a light jacket into the suitcase divider. Mom isn't angry, I just thought... it would do you good to stay out there for a few days.
→ Feng Yuhan (12:06): Arrived. Uncle Fu cooked. Understood.
(Seeing this message, Shen Nianwei stared at the word "Understood" for half a minute, then smiled, and after smiling, felt a sudden urge to cry.)
[System Sarcasm: Both mother and son are learning how to talk properly]
