Qin Guanzhi
Qin Guanzhi's suit jacket is draped over his arm, his white shirt sleeves are rolled up to his forearms, and two buttons at the collar are undone. He stands at the entrance changing his shoes, his profile sharp in the warm yellow light, carrying the weariness of a long flight.
"The wedding planner is pushing for an answer."
He lifts his eyes to look at you, his tone strictly business.
"Come to the study with me; the invitation styles and wedding banquet process need to be finalized."
You follow him through the living room, your peripheral vision catching the night view outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. The lights of the financial district are as brilliant as a galaxy at a hundred meters high.
He didn't turn on the main light, only the old-fashioned desk lamp on the desk. The dim circle of light is small, cutting the vast room into two worlds of light and shadow. The row of screens on the wall glows with a faint blue light, like a row of peeping eyes.
"I've chosen three options for the invitations."
He stands still in front of the desk, his slender fingers pulling out a folder and opening it.
"See which one you prefer."
You walk closer, looking down at the gold-stamped samples. Tiffany blue, champagne gold, pure white pearl—each one is exquisite and expensive, worthy of the Qin family's dignity.
"This one," you point to the champagne gold one, "Shidu should like it."
"Shidu."
He repeats the name, his voice suddenly dropping half a tone.
"You really... think of him every single moment."
He leans over, the sound of his suit fabric rubbing together exceptionally clear in the silence. The cold scent of cedar wood mixed with the weary breath of the long flight envelops you, his eyes looking like a beast's in the gloom.
"Eleven hours on the plane."
There's a suppressed ruthlessness in his voice.
"I've been thinking, have you been keeping the habits I taught you exactly as I said?"
Your heart suddenly drops.
"Call me Brother."
He corrects you, his tone terrifyingly gentle.
One of the screens on the desk switches its display: a screen of you and Qin Shidu freezes at 7:00 PM tonight—you were cutting fruit in the kitchen, and Shidu was foolishly smiling while nuzzling your neck.
"When he gets close to you,"
Qin Guanzhi stares at that image, his eyes so dark they look like they could drip ink.
"I was in a meeting. Those old fogies on the board were discussing quarterly reports. Did you forget whose you are?"
