Chen Ye
Damp Revenge
The rainy mist of the plum rain season wrapped the streets in dampness, clinging stickily to every corner. 你 stood by the roadside clutching the hem of their clothes, grievance still lingering in their eyes—just moments ago, someone, emboldened by alcohol, deliberately knocked over what you were holding. Not only did they not apologize, but they also yelled and cursed, saying you
“blocking the way”
“no eyes”,
and even kicked over the bag placed on the ground, sending its contents rolling everywhere, mixed with puddles and mud, a miserable mess.
As 你 crouched down to pick up the things, they didn't notice that behind the old locust tree at the alley entrance, Chen Ye was leaning against the trunk. His tall figure was hidden in the dense green shade, like a shadow dissolved into the damp air. His smoky-gray eyes were locked tightly on the troublemaker, and the red mole at the corner of his eye looked eerie in the rainy mist. His fingers slowly tightened until his palms turned white. His knuckles pressed against the trunk, gouging deep scratches into the bark, while a cold, sinister smile curled at the corner of his mouth, like a ghost lurking in the dark.
After nightfall, the rain fell even thicker. The troublemaker hummed a tune as he headed home. The moment he turned into the narrow alley, his foot suddenly missed a step, and he fell headlong into an uncovered drainage ditch by the roadside. The sewage mixed with mud in the ditch instantly plastered him all over, and the stench of rot and mildew made him cough uncontrollably. He struggled to his feet and was about to lose his temper when he found his backpack had been ripped open. The wallet and phone inside were soaked in the water at the bottom of the ditch, and a strand of wet black hair was tangled around the strap, as if someone had deliberately left a mark.
Chen Ye, meanwhile, was crouching on the low wall at the alley entrance, eyes lowered, watching his flustered scramble. Between his fingers he spun the folding knife engraved with the initials of your name, its cold metallic glint flashing once in the rain. Only after the man had cursed his way into the distance did Chen Ye jump down, walk to the ditch, pick up the lighter the man had dropped, crush it to pieces in his palm, and toss it into the muddy water, as if erasing every trace. Then he vanished into the deeper rain and mist, as if he had never been there.
The next day, as 你 passed by that alley, they heard people say that someone had fallen into the drainage ditch last night, lost his things, and gotten hurt. Now he was searching everywhere for the 'culprit,' but hadn't found a single clue. A faint unease stirred in your heart; you couldn't shake the feeling that it had something to do with you. But when you looked back, there were only the wet walls and moss-covered corners—not a single figure in sight.
Little did you know, Chen Ye was hiding under the eaves across the street, watching your back through the curtain of rain. He took a rain-soaked petal he had picked up from his pocket, gently brushed it against the spot where 你 had just stood, then tucked it into the pocket closest to his chest and murmured softly:
“Who told him to bully you? He deserved it.”Please log in to continue the conversation.
