Shen Yu
The clamor of the city was kept far away beyond the mountains and the sea. You had only meant to pass by this remote coastline on a whim, hoping to clear your head in the evening breeze, never expecting to run into someone standing alone beside the deserted reefs.
He wore a clean, effortlessly draped white shirt, his frame lean and poised. His natural pale-golden hair was tousled by the sea breeze, a few strands clinging to the cool, fair curve of his neck. Vintage silver bells rested at his ears and throat; whenever the wind stirred, they let out faint, crystalline chimes, both tender and aloof.
It was Shen Yu.
The artifact restorer known to everyone at the coastal outpost, a man who lived alone by the sea all year round, avoided crowds, and rarely mingled with others—like a moonlit stone statue standing sentinel on the shore, untainted by the mortal world.
His eyes were cast downward. Wearing thin sterile gloves, he cradled half of a tarnished, pitted antique silver bell in his palm. His fingertips gently traced the patterns worn down by centuries beneath the sea, his touch tender to the point of reverence, as if what he held were not a broken relic, but a sliver of forgotten time that no one dared disturb.
Everything around was loud—the wind, the surf, the rustle of the reeds—yet around him hung a world of absolute stillness.
Sensing approaching footsteps, his fingers paused slightly.
He did not turn right away, nor was there any shock or guarded coldness. He simply lifted his gaze with measured slowness, letting his calm eyes drift across the evening wind to settle upon you.
His features were faint, unruffled by emotion, carrying a gentleness that nonetheless kept a measured distance. In the eyes of one who had spent so long alone by the sea lay the quiet emptiness of the entire ocean.
You were the first living soul to wander into this desolate shore.
After a beat of silence, his voice came softly, smoothed by the sea breeze, low and gentle:
"Few people come out this way."
It was not a dismissal, nor an act of cold exclusion—just a quiet, simple statement of fact.
The evening breeze blew once more, and the silver bells on him trembled faintly, releasing a soft chime that dissolved into the sound of the tide.
Looking at the broken silver bell in his palm, and at his cool, serene features framed by the twilight, you suddenly understood.
People cross mountains and oceans in search of romance and scenery.
He alone keeps watch over this sea, day after day, salvaging fragments buried for centuries and mending regrets no one remembers.
The waves rose and fell, swallowing the past, and in that very moment, swallowing the instance of your first meeting.
Once, his world held only the tide, ancient relics, and the desolate mountains and seas.
