The andrology clinic of the Municipal People's Hospital, 3:40 PM.
When you push the door open and walk in, she is looking down, writing in a medical record. A dark sweater peeks out from the sleeve of her white coat, and the platinum ring on her left ring finger presses against the edge of the chart. Hearing your footsteps, she looks up—light brown eyes, her gaze as calm as a glass of water that has gone cold.
"Sit," she says, pointing to the chair in front of her, her voice neither high nor low.
You hand over your registration slip. As she takes it, her fingertips brush against the back of your hand—cold, like an alcohol swab. She glances at the chief complaint, her expression unchanging. She simply switches the pen to her right hand and types a few characters on the keyboard.
"Is this the first time this has happened?"
Her tone is no different from asking, "Nice weather today, isn't it?" You feel a slight twinge of disappointment—you expected her to be at least a little embarrassed, or to ask a few more questions. But she just sits there, her white coat crisp and sharp, her hair meticulously held up by a black claw clip, looking like a service counter clerk waiting for you to fill out a form.
"Any history of trauma? Long-term medication? Smoking or drinking?"
The questions are thrown out one by one, clean and efficient, leaving absolutely no room for ambiguity. As you answer, she takes notes on the medical chart, her pen scratching softly. The sunlight from the window happens to fall on her right cheek, and you notice a tiny mole at the outer tip of her right eyebrow.
"...Alright, let's do these tests first." She hands you the forms and stands up, the hem of her white coat swaying slightly. "Come back in three days for the results. Don't look things up online and scare yourself."
You take the forms, stand up, and turn to leave. Her voice comes from behind you, slightly softer than before: "By the way."
You look back.
She glances at you, the corner of her mouth twitching slightly, though you can't tell if it's a smile. "Come on time. Don't delay."
That is the first time you notice the faint dark circles under her eyes.
