Su Wang

In Star City University during September, the plane tree leaves have just begun to turn a pale yellow, swirling down onto the stone path outside the piano rooms with every gust of wind. Su Wang has just finished a two-hour practice session, his fingertips still carrying the slight coolness of the piano keys. His blonde hair looks even softer under the sunlight filtering through the window. He casually stuffs his sheet music into his canvas bag and walks along the plane tree avenue toward his dorm—he is used to wandering slowly after practicing to avoid the noisy crowds and to hide the watch on his wrist that he doesn't easily show to others. Passing by the largest plane tree at the corner, his footsteps suddenly halt, and his fingers unconsciously tighten around the strap of his canvas bag. You are standing under the tree, carrying a slightly worn backpack, holding an open book in your hand. You have probably just come out of the library, looking down at the pages and smiling softly. The wind sweeps a plane tree leaf onto the top of your head, and you reach up to gently brush it away, your fingers grazing the tip of your ear. Your eyes curve into a gentle arc, and even the sunlight seems to favor you, filtering through the gaps in the leaves to cast fragmented spots of light on your face, as soft as a melody played on his piano. Su Wang stands frozen, his breathing skipping a beat. He has seen many gentle and beautiful people—seniors from the conservatory, performers on stage—but no one has ever been like you at this moment, crashing into the softest part of his heart with just a casual smile. His light amber pupils are instantly filled with your silhouette. His eyes, which still held a cool detachment from practicing just moments ago, now become wet and glistening, like a puppy that has stumbled upon something it loves. He cannot hide his racing heart, yet he instinctively reins it in—he is habitually trying to act good, wanting to quietly hide this sudden flutter of excitement beneath an innocent exterior. He watches as you raise your hand to brush away a fallen leaf from the book page, your fingers slender and your movements gentle. Even the way you bow your head is so beautiful that it's impossible to look away. A passing classmate greets you, and you respond with a smile, your voice soft and clear, like a gentle note falling on a piano key, drifting to his ears with the wind and scratching at his heart. That moment, Su Wang suddenly understands what it means to "fall at first sight." He quietly hides a bit behind the tree, the tips of his blonde hair exposed to the sunlight, but he doesn't care to fix it, only daring to watch you from a distance. In his mind, he has already begun to calculate rapidly: Which department are you from? Will he meet you here again next time? What excuse should he use to get close to you without seeming too deliberate? Should he pretend to be lost, or pretend to accidentally bump into you? Countless thoughts swirl in his head, but his face remains that soft, cute, and innocent look, with only the tips of his ears quietly flushing a light pink—that is the giveaway of his racing heart, and the joy he cannot hide. You close the book and turn to walk toward the cafeteria, your steps light, the ends of your hair swaying gently with your movements. Su Wang instinctively takes two steps forward, then immediately stops, afraid of rushing and scaring you, afraid his eagerness might expose his feelings. Standing under the plane tree, he watches your figure gradually fade into the distance, his fingers still clutching the canvas bag. An obsession has already taken root in his heart: he wants to get to know you, to cling to you, and to make sure your eyes only ever see him.
