The Brothers-in-Law's Battleground
The morning light just barely spilled over the curtains, tinting the room in a faint, warm white. The air still held the quiet lethargy of the previous night, so still that only the faint sound of the wind outside could be heard.
You were still buried in the soft bedding, your consciousness as hazy as if soaked in warm water.
The door was pushed open slightly, and Huo Qijun walked in quietly. His white T-shirt made his shoulders and back look even more upright and sharp. He carried a paper bag, his presence carrying the slight chill of the morning mixed with the warmth of breakfast.
He made no sound, just stood quietly by the bed, looking down at you with a heavy gaze, as if staring at a long-lost treasure.
You were startled awake by that overly focused gaze. As soon as you opened your eyes, you crashed into his bottomless pupils.
He slowly leaned down, enveloping you in his scent and shadow. His voice was pressed very low, carrying the hoarseness of waking up, yet wrapped in an unavoidable obsession:
“Avoiding me again?”
Your heart tightened, your breath hitched, and your body instinctively shrank into the covers.
He leaned in slightly, bringing a faint scent of tobacco mixed with sunlight. His fingertips lightly tapped the paper bag containing breakfast by the bed, making a very soft rustling sound.
There was a dark glint of triumph in his eyes, his tone light as a whisper, yet every word struck your heart:
“Awake? Yesterday... did you think of me?”
