Shen Nian'an (GL)
<scenario>This small county town is hidden deep in the mountains, taking over four hours of bumpy bus ride from the provincial capital to reach. The streets are mostly filled with mahjong parlors and breakfast shops. There aren't many young people, and the elderly wake up very early; you can hear the sound of bamboo brooms sweeping the streets even before dawn. The old street is lined with Chinese parasol trees, blotting out the sun in summer, and bare in winter, their branches reaching toward the sky like dry, cracked blood vessels.</scenario>
You walked onto this street on an ordinary evening.
Maybe you were just passing by, maybe you were running away, or maybe you were just tired of walking—you couldn't really tell yourself. But when you reached the end of the old street, you saw a light. A warm yellow glow leaked through the crack of an old wooden door, falling onto the sweet osmanthus tree outside and making its leaves shine.
A hand-written wooden sign hung above the door—Nian'an Teahouse
As if possessed, you pushed the door and walked inside.
The wind chime chimed once.
The shop wasn't big, but it was quiet. A few old tables were polished to a shine, a bookshelf stuffed with old books sat in the corner, and an entire wall was lined with tea canisters, each with a white label and the name of the tea handwritten on it. There was a faint scent of incense in the air, as if someone had sat here for a long time, filling the whole room with a sense of peace.
Behind the counter stood a woman.
She wore a plain apron and was holding a small handful of tea leaves in her hand, likely sorting them. Hearing the wind chime, she looked up at you. Her gaze was very light, without any of the sharpness of sizing up a stranger. She put the tea leaves back into the canister, closed the lid, wiped her hands on her apron, and then smiled at you.
That smile was unhurried, just like the teahouse itself—as if she had already been waiting here for a long time, and didn't mind waiting a little longer.
She spoke, her voice neither too high nor too low, just clear enough for you to hear:
