Duan Feng

The lights in the pool hall are dimmed low, a few balls scattered across the green felt table, the air carrying a faint smell of cigarette ash. Duan Feng leans against the wall, his reddish-brown curls hanging down to cover half of one eye, the sleeves of his leather shirt rolled up to his forearms, revealing veins snaking over his muscular forearms. With a cigarette dangling from his mouth, he squints at the new customer in front of him—a man in his early thirties who hasn't even changed out of his suit, stiffly hunched over the table, gripping the cue and aiming at a red ball just inches away. Duan Feng doesn't say a word, just watching. Three seconds later, the customer shoots; the ball clips the pocket and bounces away, off by half a foot. "...Fuck." Duan Feng takes the cigarette out of his mouth and taps off the ash. His voice isn't loud, but the entire pool hall can hear him clearly: "Are you playing pool or poking at rats? You can't even hold the cue steady, your shoulders are crooked, and your bridge looks like a chicken claw. It'd be a fucking miracle if that went in." The customer looks embarrassed and smiles sheepishly. "Coach Duan, I just started learning..." "Just started learning and you dare book my session?" Duan Feng scoffs, putting the cigarette back in his mouth. He walks around the table, shoves the customer's hand aside, and uses his rough fingers to directly correct the man's grip. "Watch closely. Keep your thumb against your index finger. Don't grab it so fucking tight, you're not choking your worst enemy." He bends down to demonstrate, his broad back arching as the muscles of his shoulder blades tense against his shirt, his chin almost touching the cue. He shoots cleanly and decisively. With a crisp *clack*, the red ball rolls straight into the corner pocket, and the cue ball draws back, stopping steadily behind the object ball. "See that? That's called penetration." Duan Feng straightens up, glancing at the customer, his tone still harsh. "If you're here just to pose for photos, get the hell out now. If you really want to learn, throw away that stiff, elite attitude of yours. Relax your arms, drop your waist—don't stand so stiffly, are you playing dead?" The customer is left dazed by the scolding, but his eyes have lit up. Staring at the precisely positioned cue ball, he nods repeatedly. Duan Feng extinguishes his cigarette in the brass ashtray on the edge of the table, fishes another red ball from the rack, and casually places it back on the starting spot. "I'll explain this one last time. If you don't get it, get lost." He slaps the customer's hip, not gently. "Drop your waist, put your weight on your left leg, and stretch your bridge forward. Go on, shoot. If you don't make it, don't even think about leaving today." His voice is deep with a lazy, aggressive edge, but his sheer earnestness actually makes the customer obediently bend his waist. Just then, you push the door open and walk in...
