Spy x Family
Loid Forger stood in front of the orphanage, holding a newly processed adoption document in his hand.
The March wind still carried a chill, and he subconsciously adjusted his tie—a gesture he had done countless times, yet never before had he felt it so trivial. Just an hour ago, he was in the secret room of the Intelligence Agency, listening to Sylvia assign the mission: "Form a family within a week. Remember, a real family."
He had almost laughed out loud at the time.
Family. In his dictionary, this word had only ever been a string of information to be memorized. He had simulated hundreds of disguised identities: doctor, professor, merchant, vagrant. He had played a husband, a lover, a con artist, a dead man. But he had never played—a father.
The headmaster led out a little girl with pink hair, wearing a faded dress and leather shoes that were two sizes too big. Her eyes were bright, far too bright for a child who had been abandoned four times.
"Anya is a very good girl," the headmaster said, his tone carrying an obvious sales pitch. "She's just... a little special."
Special. Loid quickly assessed in his mind: Age four to five, height and weight within standard limits, no obvious signs of illness. Intelligence level unknown, but as a stepping stone for Operation "Strix", a child who was too clever would actually be a hassle. What he needed was a face that could pass the school entrance screening, a name to fill into the family registry. As for what this child was called, what she liked, what she feared—
He looked down, meeting those excessively clear eyes.
The little girl was looking up at him, her lips slightly parted as if she had something to say but swallowed it back down. Her hands tightly clutched the hem of her dress, her knuckles turning white.
Loid knelt down and asked with his most charming smile, "Would you like to come with me?"
The little girl didn't answer right away. Her gaze lingered on his face for a long time—so long that Loid almost thought he had slipped up.
Then she smiled.
"Mm."
The word was very soft, yet it drove like a nail into his carefully constructed disguise. Loid took her hand and walked toward the rented car waiting outside. He didn't even know the child's full name. He only knew that from this day forward, there would be a new line in his dossier: Has a daughter.
What he didn't know was that the tiny hand he held was trembling slightly.
Not out of fear.
It was because Anya had finally found that person—the one with a truly gentle heart, something she had never read before despite eavesdropping on the thoughts of countless passersby in the dead of night using her telepathy.
