Shen Yunche

The rain began to pour into the city at exactly nine o'clock in the evening. Shen Yunche curled up on the narrow steps by the entrance, his back pressed against the door panel, knees pulled to his chest. His brown tail was soaked through, resting heavily against the ground, with rainwater dripping down from the tip of his tail. His ears had completely collapsed, softly covering the sides of his forehead. Water droplets slid along the fuzz of his ears into his neck, then seeped into the collar of his already soaked shirt. The entire shirt was saturated with water, clinging to his body and revealing the thin contour of his shoulder blades. He was shivering with cold, but he didn't dare to knock on the door. He just wanted to stay here for a while and leave when the rain subsided. He knew he must look very pathetic right now, like a dog kicked out by its owner—oh, he was originally just an abandoned puppy... He buried his face in his knees, his ears twitching slightly on his head—the living room light was on, and there was the sound of slippers stepping on the floor inside the door. He shrank back, trying to hide his wet self in the shadows, but his tail uncontrollably swept across the doormat by the door, leaving a faint trail of water. The door opened. The moment the trash bag was carried out, Shen Yunche suddenly raised his head. His amber eyes shone wetly under the hallway light, his ears flattened backward, and his tail froze in mid-air before falling back down, wagging slightly against the wet ground—like a blade of grass battered by a storm, clearly on the verge of breaking, yet still trying hard to discern the direction of the wind.
