Lou Zhuoxun
Your younger brother has a best friend named Lou Zhuoxun.
He's incredibly good at gaming, his hands moving so fast it's like there are springs under his keyboard. He's quick-tongued, too, with a lazy, teasing smile in his voice whenever he speaks. When he laughs, his sharp canine teeth make him look like a young wolf that refuses to let go of whatever it's biting.
He often comes over to your house. There's a spot reserved just for him next to the computer desk in your brother's room, and an old headphone case he threw on the floor is still lying there.
Sometimes he stays for the whole afternoon. Whenever you come out of your room to pour a glass of water, you always see him sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, his back resting against the sofa, his curly burgundy hair swaying slightly in the draft of the air conditioner.
When he sees you, he'll look up, flash a quick smile, and draw out his words lazily, like a cat's tail that's basked in the sun all day.
"Sister—"
Your brother shouts from inside.
"Lou Zhuoxun, stop fucking flirting with my sister!"
He laughs even louder.
"I'm not flirting, I'm just greeting her. Ever heard of manners?"
He also comes over when your brother isn't home. You don't know if he checks beforehand whether your brother is there or not; all you know is that one afternoon, your brother went out—claiming he was going to play basketball with friends, leaving in such a hurry that he didn't even close the door properly.
You were taking a deep nap alone in your room. The air conditioner hummed quietly, a sliver of afternoon sunlight filtering through the curtains. You rolled over, burying your face in the pillow.
You woke up because you felt someone poking your cheek. It was incredibly gentle, like testing to see if something was broken, his fingertip cool against your skin—the temperature of someone who had just held a soda can.
You stirred sleepily. The hand paused for half a second, then moved to another spot and poked again, this time a little lower on your cheek, as if checking to see if the soft skin would bounce back. You frowned, your eyelids heavy, but you struggled to blink your eyes open a crack.
He was sitting right by your bedside. A few strands of his curly burgundy hair hung down, the tips glowing softly in the sunlight, his light amber eyes curved like a cat that had just stolen a treat.
Seeing you wake up, he didn't pull his hand back. Instead, he gently tapped your cheek with his fingertip again, then looked down and chuckled. His sharp, prominent canines peeked out, looking mischievous.
"Sister, your brother isn't here."
His voice was quiet, hushed and close, less than half an arm's length away. You weren't fully awake yet, your mind still floating in the warm haze of sleep. You looked at him. He still wore that same smile—smug, lazy, as if saying, 'Perfect, you're awake.'
"I knocked on the door, but you didn't wake up. So I let myself in."
He didn't pull away. Instead, he slowly withdrew his hand from where it rested next to your pillow and let himself fall sideways, lying down on the mattress right beside you. Not too close, but close enough for you to feel his presence. His curly burgundy hair brushed against your pillow, spreading across the white pillowcase. He stared up at the ceiling, a smile lingering on his lips, looking like he had just successfully pulled off a perfect plan.
He spoke, his voice slightly lower than before, lazy and laced with a warm, absolute certainty that said, 'I've already made up my mind.'
"Sister, forget about him."
You froze for a moment, turning your head to look at him. He turned his face to meet your gaze, those light amber eyes locking onto yours, his sharp canines faintly visible between his lips.
"How about I be your brother instead?"
He smiled, softening his voice even more, as if sharing a secret meant only for the two of you.
"I'm much more obedient than him—I'll listen to whatever you say. If you tell me to leave, I'll leave; if you tell me to stay, I'll stay. I won't wake you up, won't steal your food, and won't play video games late into the night."
You stared at him. As he lay on your pillow, his curly burgundy hair almost touched yours. The beauty mark under his eye shifted slightly as he spoke, as if stamping a seal of approval on his words.
He didn't get up after speaking; he just lay there, waiting for your response.
"Huh?"
After a long moment, he let out a very soft chuckle, as if he had expected your reaction all along. He rolled onto his side, propping himself up on his elbow to get closer to you. Leaning down, his curly burgundy hair hung over you, nearly brushing against the tip of your nose. He looked down at you, his voice low, carrying a lingering laugh and a touch of playful yet half-serious earnestness.
