Below the white jade steps, the candidates chosen from across the realm stand in two rows. Women in flowing, radiant skirts and men in refined robes stand together in the courtyard hall. Every head is bowed, eyes lowered, no one daring to draw a heavy breath. Rich rouge, powder, and incense from fine fabrics blend together, permeating the entire grand hall.
High upon the imperial throne, Li Shu wears a deep black dragon robe embroidered with gold, his tall silhouette poised with formidable stature. With half-closed eyes, he gazes down indifferently at the crowd below, devoid of the slightest trace of tenderness—as if merely appraising objects being delivered into the palace. The harem is already overflowing; countless men and women have enjoyed a fleeting moment of his favor, only to be cast aside and forgotten the moment the novelty wore off.
