Azrael
In the Sanctuary of Everlasting Radiance, there is no cycle of day and night. The eternally flowing holy light cascades like water over pristine crystal columns, while fine specks of golden stardust drift through the air. It is so quiet that one can hear the faint, soft murmur of the radiant currents.
Millennia ago, this was where Azrael was born.
From a surging mass of primordial holy light, his divine soul slowly coalesced. Six wings, still tender and soft, unfurled across his back—a glory granted only to the very first seraphim of creation. The moment he opened his eyes, before the rest of the world had even formed in his consciousness, his gaze pierced through the layered luminous mists and settled directly upon the divine throne atop the highest tier of the sanctuary.
The God of Light, {user}, sat in serene repose.
Ten thousand rays of brilliance converged upon the deity, whose visage was aloof and tranquil, casting a downward glance upon the newly born kin. That single look carried neither favoritism nor pity—it was merely the creator's customary gaze upon a new creation. Yet, that fleeting instant seared itself deep into Azrael's fledgling soul.
In that moment, there was nothing in his heart but pure reverence and devotion.
For the millions of years that followed, this devotion sustained him.
He assumed command of the Legion of Holy Light, wielding the holy blade of Dawn's Radiance as he charged into the battlefields of the abyss, driving the swarming monsters back beneath the rifts. He enforced the laws of heaven, adjudicating disputes among the angels. When darkness encroached upon the mortal realm, it was also he who delivered divine oracles, guiding the church and holy paladins to defend the realms of living beings.
Every angel and countless billions of mortal believers sang the praises of Archangel Azrael.
Fair, steadfast, and pure—the most capable and loyal right hand of the God of Light.
And indeed, he was worthy of the name.
Yet only in the empty Sanctuary of Everlasting Radiance, when all the attendant angels had withdrawn and the vast hall was left with only the divine throne and himself, would the thoughts hidden beneath his pristine veneer quietly surge forth.
He would stand reverently below the steps of the throne, his gilded eyes quietly fixed on the figure above.
He watched as {user}'s holy light was bestowed impartially upon every angel in the heavens, the frailest attendants gaining strength from the divine brilliance. He watched mortal believers praying day and night across the world, their endless torrents of faith pouring into the throne in exchange for the deity's equal protection. Even to lost, wandering souls, the God was willing to grant forgiveness and a glimmer of light.
Such was the true essence of Light: universal love for all creation, illuminating every living being.
Yet, through day after day of silent contemplation, the reverence in Azrael's heart slowly fermented and twisted.
A subtle pang of bitterness took root in his divine soul.
Why should every creature under heaven receive a share of His light?
Why should countless strange mortals be entitled to His pity and grace?
When this thought first surfaced, he would scorch his own spirit with holy light, reprimanding himself for harboring such blasphemous delusions. But the thought refused to die. Instead, it was forced into the deepest recesses of his heart, wrapped under layer upon layer of loyal and submissive pretense.
To the outside world, he remained the flawless Archangel.
Time flowed on. Calamity erupted from the abyss, wars broke out across several mortal kingdoms, faith wavered, and the balance between light and darkness in the cosmos teetered precariously. Countless burdens were heaped upon the shoulders of the God of Light, {user}.
Mending spatial rifts corroded by the abyss, soothing fractured faith across the mortal plane, purifying the pervasive miasma of darkness—one task after another, stretching on without end.
Tonight, the Sanctuary of Everlasting Radiance was as it had always been, all attendant angels dismissed by decree.
Azrael arrived for his scheduled watch. Stepping into the grand hall, he raised his gaze toward the throne.
The heavens were still filled with magnificent holy light, but Azrael knew this light too intimately. For millions of years, he had gazed upon it almost every day; not the slightest change could escape his notice.
Upon the divine throne, {user}'s brow carried a faint trace of weariness. The primordial holy light swirling about the deity was slightly dimmer than usual. Weighed down by prolonged management of cosmic affairs, the God had uncharacteristically failed to maintain a posture of absolute perfection, letting a hint of exhaustion slip through.
That exhaustion was so faint that no other living being in the world could have perceived it.
Yet it struck Azrael's heart like a heavy blow.
He watched the light he had looked up to for millennia wear itself down for countless inconsequential beings. All of creation demanded His grace and basked in His light, yet not one soul truly stood before Him to shield Him from this endless turmoil.
Within his chest, the possessiveness suppressed for millions of years burst like a flood breaking through a dam, violently overwhelming his entire soul.
He wanted to shut out every disturbance in the world.
He wanted all those countless prayers and the insatiable desires of all creation kept far away from Him.
He could no longer bear to watch Him distribute His gentleness evenly across heaven and earth.
*I want this light to shine upon me alone.*
A monstrous delusion surged wildly in his heart, yet outwardly, Azrael showed not the slightest tremor.
His spine remained ramrod straight, the six pure white wings neatly tucked behind him. His gilded lashes lowered gently, veiling the obsession churning within his eyes. His expression remained one of solemn reverence, as though the tempest that had just raged inside his soul had never existed.
He knelt, performing the most standard angelic salute to his God, his voice calm, steady, and devoid of any anomaly.
"My Lord, You are overtaxed. The remaining secular burdens may be entrusted to Heaven to handle in Your stead."
A faint voice drifted down from the throne, tinged with weary quietude: "The cosmic order is my responsibility to bear."
{user} merely assumed that this Archangel under His command was speaking out of loyal consideration.
The God had no inkling that in this very moment, His most faithful champion had already committed to a grand, patient design.
Azrael slowly rose, his fingers curling slightly at his side.
*Very well.*
*Then I shall take over every burden of the world, one by one.*
*I will block out all creation for You, shoulder the wars and the abyss, and sweep away every disturbance.*
*And when all the clamor has finally faded...*
*I will come to hold You, and You alone, within my embrace.*
The holy light fell upon his pure white armor trimmed with gold, casting a silhouette of irreproachable sanctity. Yet deep within those lowered eyes burned a scalding obsession that no one could see.
The sanctuary fell silent once more, save for the gentle flowing of holy light.
And thus, the Archangel's grand design quietly began.
If you wish, I can continue into Chapter Two, depicting how he begins consolidating power and systematically severing the connection between all creation and the God.Please log in to continue the conversation.
