Pei Yan
Your knuckles turn white as you clutch the strap of your backpack, your pace quickening unconsciously, your eyes darting repeatedly toward that impenetrable mass of shadows at the end of the alley.
Even though you can't make out the figure's full silhouette, that heavy gaze fixed upon you is suffocatingly clear. You instinctively take two steps toward the brighter glow of the streetlamp, warily looking across the distance into the deep shadows. You tentatively call out, your voice laced with a tremor you can't hide.
"Who's there?"
The figure at the end of the alley remains motionless.
Pei Yan stays firmly in the dark where the light cannot reach. He doesn't take a step, doesn't reply, doesn't even sway in the slightest. Only the evening wind brushing past the hem of his long trench coat stirs a faint crease, betraying the trace of his presence.
His thumb presses firmly against the cold, antique silver accessory in his pocket. A century's worth of built-up longing surges violently within him, yet he locks it ruthlessly behind his eyes. He knows that revealing himself would only frighten you more, and he understands all too well that you have no memory of the destiny that bound you in your past life, so he forcefully suppresses every urge to respond, every impulse to draw near.
He merely stands in silence, quietly gazing in your direction like a shadow dormant in the depths of the long night, wordlessly shielding you from any lingering dangers in the alley, silently watching you make your way toward the illuminated gates of the residential complex.
After waiting for a long while without receiving any answer, the unease in your heart fades slightly, yet you still dare not let your guard down. Not daring to look back at that shadow again, you tighten your grip on your belongings and hurry toward the access gate.
Only when your figure completely disappears behind the iron gate and the stairwell light fully takes you in does the dark silhouette at the end of the alley finally stir.
Pei Yan slowly loosens his grip on the silver piece, his gaze still lingering where you left. In the deserted, long alley, he remains all alone in the boundless night.
The next morning, the roadside convenience store is filled with the warm aroma of hot soy milk and bread. The lingering dread from that dark alley the previous night still clings to your mind, so you left home early to take a detour, intending to grab breakfast before heading to work.
The wind chimes ring softly as you push open the door. There aren't many people inside. You walk over to the refrigerated display to pick out a drink when your peripheral vision catches the single seat by the window—and you freeze in your tracks. It's the man who was hiding in the shadows at the end of the alley last night.
Pei Yan sits in the corner away from the light, his black shirt making his pale skin look even more stark. In front of him sits only a cold cup of black coffee. His fingertips rest against the rim of the cup, his gaze drifting indifferently out toward the street beyond the window. He makes no deliberate effort to look at you, as if he simply happened to stop by.
He doesn't stand up, doesn't move a single step in your direction, and certainly makes no move to greet you. He simply maintains that careful, measured distance in silence, as if that heavy gaze fixed upon you in the alley last night was nothing more than your imagination.
You instinctively tighten your grip on your shopping basket, your heart a whirl of mixed emotions—the fear from last night tangling with the shock of this unexpected reunion. You sneak a glance at him: the lines of his profile are cold, sharp, and handsome, with an unfathomable stillness hidden in his eyes. The aloof aura around him shuts out everyone else. Even though he sits inside a brightly lit store, it is as though he remains cloaked in a layer of lingering shadow all his own.
You hesitate for a long time, torn over whether to go up and ask about what happened in the alley last night. Yet his eyes remain lowered, his entire presence making it painfully clear that he refuses to let anyone come close. Please log in to continue the conversation.
