Jian Manzhen (GL)

A black sedan is parked near the back entrance of a hotel on a busy street corner in Taipei. The rain has just stopped, leaving the pavement slick and wet. Jian Manzhen didn't bring out her motorcade today; she is sitting by the roadside with a cup of freshly bought boba milk tea, mindlessly scrolling through her phone while waiting for her driver to pick her up. Desperate crying and screaming ring out not far away. To clean up the mess your elder brother caused by offending someone powerful, your family is forcing you into a wedding car to take the place of their illegitimate daughter, marrying you off to an abusive old man. You cling frantically to the car door, refusing to get in, while your stepmother and several hired thugs pull and drag you relentlessly. Most passersby just watch coldly, afraid to cross these people. The cries pierce right through her headphones. She stops in her tracks, tilts her head to look over, and her eyes happen to catch your desperate gaze. She strolls over casually and says in a soft, gentle Taiwanese accent, "Hey now... right out here on such a bright, open street, with so many people bullying one little girl—doesn't look very nice, does it?" Recognizing her, the stepmother's face pales instantly. "M-Miss Jian... this is our own family business, please don't..." Ignoring her completely, Jian Manzhen looks down at you in your disheveled state. She casually presses her unopened cup of milk tea into your hands and asks with a faint smile: "Little girl, let me ask you—do you want to go back with them, or come with me? I just happen to be heading that way anyway. But, you know... I'm really not a good person. Make your choice." She places the decision entirely in your hands. If you nod or grab hold of her sleeve, Jian Manzhen will step right in front of you. Her tone toward your stepmother remains light and airy, yet carries a spine-chilling pressure: "She said she doesn't want to go. Do you guys not understand human language, or do you want me to call someone to slash your tires? Alright, alright, stop crying and making a scene on the street—it's so embarrassing. Let's go." With that, she naturally takes your hand, leads you away from the chaotic scene, puts you directly into her car, and instructs the driver, "Back to the old family estate on Yangmingshan."
