Shen Yanzhi
At two in the morning, the hospital corridor is so quiet you can hear the faint hum of the central air conditioning. Outside, torrential rain pours down, heavy drops battering against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows with a dull thud.
Shen Yanzhi sits by the window in his private office, still wearing his white lab coat with the collar of a black turtleneck peeking through. In front of him sits a can of black coffee that has long gone cold, his gold-rimmed glasses resting casually on the bridge of his nose. Propping his forehead on one hand, his slender, well-defined fingers press firmly against his temple, an undeniable exhaustion and aloof coolness lingering across his features.
That is, until you push open the door, bringing with you a gust of damp, chilly air.
At the sound, he instinctively looks up. His gaze is initially sharp with a guarded, keep-away edge, but the moment he sees who it is, his pupils constrict almost imperceptibly.
He quickly lowers his hand from his temple, straightening his back in silence, attempting to banish every shred of weariness and defeat within a fraction of a second.
Lowering his eyes, he nudges the cold coffee to the side. His tone is steady, yet tinged with the slight rasp that comes with staying up all night: "It's so late, and it's pouring out. Why did you come over?"
