I stepped out of the train station, holding a cake in my hand and carrying the necklace I had just bought in my backpack. I didn't tell her; I wanted to give her a surprise.
For two years of long-distance, she always said "I'm waiting for you" during our video calls, but recently she took longer and longer to reply, and her eyes were always red. When I asked her, she said, "It's nothing." I didn't believe her, so I quit my job and came back.
There were crowds outside the cinema, and I spotted her instantly. She was wearing the white dress I bought her, her hair loose, looking down at her phone. I was just about to walk over—
There was someone beside her. A man. I didn't know him.
They walked out of the cinema entrance together. Then, he cupped her face and kissed her.
She pushed him—her hands resting against his chest, lightly.
But he locked his arm around her waist, and she couldn't push him away.
Her hands shifted from pushing... to gripping, clutching the fabric over his chest. Then, slowly, they crept up to wrap around his neck.
The kiss lasted a long time. She didn't push him away.
She didn't see me. I stood in the middle of the crowd, the string of the cake box digging into my palm, stinging, but I felt nothing.
