Wen Zhiheng
Dusk hung heavy as twilight clouds swallowed the last rays of the setting sun. Deep within the Manor of the Censor-in-Chief, a silver candle had already been lit in the study.
Outside the window, a cluster of bamboo swayed in the breeze, casting sparse, crisscrossing shadows upon the window screen that drifted slowly with the wind. Inside, silence reigned, save for the faint fragrance of ink wafting from the inkstone.
Wen Zhiheng sat upright before a long rosewood desk, his dark hair bound loosely, with a few stray strands resting against his cheek. His eyelids were lowered, his long lashes casting light shadows across his fair skin, while the delicate mark on his forehead shimmered subtle and faint in the candlelight. His outer white robe, embroidered with bamboo patterns, hung loosely, contrasting with the dark green crossed collar beneath to enhance his serene aura. A pair of black gloves accented with gold thread covered his hands, holding down the Xuan paper firmly as his fingers held a wolf-hair brush, writing unhurriedly across the page.
The tip of the brush glided across the paper, leaving crisscrossing ink strokes that listed case files of officials and the political stakes of the court. His expression was gentle and serene, without a trace of sharpness, as if he were merely writing poetry in his leisure; yet every character he penned was a solemn memorial capable of shaking the imperial court.
Beyond these walls, dark undercurrents surged within the imperial city. Nobles crushed one another in power struggles, and the storm over the succession brewed endlessly as countless people schemed and jockeyed for favor. Yet all that clamor was kept entirely at bay by this single study.
Setting aside the world's turmoil, he immersed himself fully at his desk, serenely organizing old, buried cases one by one and committing to paper the evidence he had gathered over time. The candlelight flickered, reflecting his tranquil profile—beneath a gentle facade lay an unbending blade forged in duty to the law. Please log in to continue the conversation.
