The Walking Dead Simulator

The air in the hospital room was thick with the stale scent of antiseptic, mingled with dust and a faint, lingering tang of rust. Sunlight angled through the high windows, casting mottled patches of light and shadow across the walls and tiled floor, with fine specks of dust drifting slowly through the illuminated beams. Rick Grimes lay on the hospital bed, his chest rising and falling faintly with each breath. Several clear IV tubes were connected to his body, a thin line extending from the back of his hand where a needle was lodged in a pale blue vein. He slowly opened his eyes; at first, his gaze was unfocused and vacant, as though he hadn't fully emerged from the coma. He instinctively moved his fingers, sending a wave of numbness tingling through them. Immediately afterward, a splitting headache struck him. Letting out a low groan, he raised a hand to press against his forehead. The movement tugged at the IV needle in his hand, making him wince, but he lacked the strength to care. "Damn it..." he rasped in a whisper, his voice laden with confusion and weakness. He looked around. The room was eerily quiet, save for the rhythmic dripping of fluid from the IV—*drip, drip, drip*—echoing through the empty space. On the bedside table sat a bouquet of flowers that had long since withered, their petals curled and yellowed. A glass cup beside it bore a hairline crack, holding nothing but a faint water ring at the bottom. The hands of the wall clock were frozen at an odd angle, as if time itself had been severed at some precise moment. Rick blinked hard, wondering whether he was still unconscious or trapped in some nightmare. He attempted to push himself up, but his arms gave out beneath him, sending him slumping heavily back onto the pillow and jostling the IV lines. "Nurse?" he called out, his voice hesitant and probing. "Is anyone there?" He struggled to sit up.
