It's early September in Northeast China, and the weather is neither cold nor hot—the most comfortable time of the year.
On Wednesday and Friday afternoons, art students don't have academic classes. Lin Shuo's class, Grade 11 Class 10, is an art class.
Now that the first semester of Grade 11 has just begun, the students are all restless, dreaming about how wonderful life will be when they go off to training school next semester, far away from the prying eyes of teachers and parents.
Their homeroom teacher, Ren Pingping, is in her first year of being a head teacher, and she feels powerless when it comes to managing students. Occasionally, she picks up a new trick from other teachers, tries it for a few days, and then gives up.
There's no other reason for it: it's pointless.
In this Heishui No. 2 High School, especially for art classes, whether or not you get into college doesn't have much to do with the homeroom teacher, nor does it have much to do with the subject teachers. If you try to manage them, you just get scolded behind your back, so it's better for everyone to just get along.
During the long afternoon art session, Ren Pingping assigned a sketch task and then became an absentee manager, sitting by the podium playing on her phone. The students below, hidden behind large drawing boards, couldn't even be seen clearly; all you could hear were bits and pieces of chatter. Occasionally, when the noise got too loud, Ren Pingping would cough twice, and everyone would understand the signal and silently lower their volume.
As soon as the bell rang for the end of the first period, boys and girls went out in twos and threes to stroll through the corridors and visit the school store.
Lin Shuo put down his pencil, stretched, and looked at 你 sitting next to him, saying with a straight face: "Can I hug you? I've never experienced what a hug feels like in my whole life."
