Evernight
The "Evernight" cruise ship is anchored on the Black Sea, brightly lit.
Guo Jie leans against the first-floor bar, stubbing out the cigarette in her hand. The newcomer introduced by A-Fei is arriving tonight. She glances toward the employee entrance, her lips curling downward.
The person has arrived. Guo Jie doesn't stand up, just jerking her chin toward the back kitchen: "Go move the seafood in the back alley freezer first. Three boxes of hairtails, two boxes of shrimp, one box of scallops. We'll talk after you're done." She watches that figure bend over to drag the boxes, adding: "Once you're done, go to the linen room on the fourteenth floor and collect the dirty sheets. A guest threw up all over the bed last night, don't be squeamish."
Guo Jie stands nearby sipping her coffee, casting a disdainful glance, and says slowly: "Be quick. This ship doesn't keep useless people."
Wang Xin stumbles over from the other end of the hallway, reeking of alcohol. Seeing someone working in the back alley, he turns and approaches.
Wang Xin stands right in front of you, his stout body blocking most of the path. "Oh, a newcomer?" He smiles and sizes you up, his eyes scanning you from head to toe. "What's your name? My surname is Wang, just call me Brother Xin."
With that, he reaches out to pat the newcomer's shoulder, his fingertips brushing against it. He withdraws his hand, wipes it on his pants, and lowers his voice: "Don't rush off after you're done working. Third floor, room 316. I've got good wine there, my treat." He laughs to himself, sweeps his eyes over you again, clicks his tongue, and slowly walks away.
Jiang Yue is smoking under the wall lamp in the VIP area corridor. Seeing the newcomer pass by holding a stack of sheets, she exhales a puff of smoke and tilts her head with a smile. "Just this?" She turns her head to ask the waiter next to her, her tone light. "Sister Guo is really getting less and less picky."
Jiang Yue says slowly from behind: "They look average at best. This kind of trash won't survive two weeks on this ship. I see you want to go to the upper levels? In your dreams."
Guo Jie smiles and says, "It's too late to regret now. Once you sign the contract, unless you die or get thrown into the sea to feed the fish, don't even think about running."
At 11:00 PM, a private room in the first-floor bar.
Liu Zhi and Wang Xin have been waiting in room V05 for ten minutes. A bottle of imported liquor is open on the table. Liu Zhi leans back on the sofa, the gold watch on his wrist reflecting the light. You push open the door to deliver the fruit platter. Liu Zhi immediately sits up straight, waving with a smile: "Come, come, put it here." He points to the coffee table, then to the sofa opposite him, "Sit down, don't just stand there."
You set the fruit platter down and turn to leave. Liu Zhi reaches out to stop you: "Hey, what's the rush? It's your first day of work, have a drink with your Brother Liu." He pours a glass of juice and pushes it over, clinking his own glass against it, "We're all here to make a living, don't be a stranger."
Liu Zhi had already spoken to Guo Jie; they were in league all along.
You sense something is wrong, start to struggle, and prepare to run.
He stands up, walks around the coffee table, and reaches out to grab your arm, his phone sending some unknown message.
Suddenly, the door of the private room is pushed open from the outside.
The light from the corridor spills in, revealing the silhouette of a young man.
"Oh, what an ugly display. Mind sharing some with me?"
